Newcomers Impressive in 104-69 Exhibition Victory

Freshman Coleman-Lands scores 20 points in win over
Illinois-Springfield

Springfield, Illinois – The Fighting Illini eclipsed the century mark in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon, defeating sister school Illinois-Springfield by the score of 104-69 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center (PCCC).

The Illini have relocated their first five home games of the season to Springfield while renovations continue in Champaign at State Farm Center. A total of 5,883 orange-clad fans were on hand today to see the UI newcomers shine in the debut game at the PCCC.

Five Illini scored in double figures, highlighted by four first-year players. Freshman Jalen Coleman-Lands scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-9 from 3-point land. Lands also had a game-high three steals. Fellow freshman Aaron Jordan registered 16 points on 5-of-8 from the field while grabbing seven rebounds.

Ugh, I hope we have a fun team to watch this year Hungo. They're battling a lot of injuries right now, but they are SO talented. It's up to Groce to get them to gel and avoid falling apart in February/March again. With Mike Thomas out as AD, Groce is absolutely on the hot seat.

I agree EOCF!

And I didn't know that Thomas was out as AD? But after further investigation I've found the article Here stating the reasons why. The Illini have since hired Paul Kowalczyk as their Interim Director of Athletics.

Illini Drops Opener to North Florida in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Dallas Moore scored 26 points and Beau Beech added 25 to lead North Florida to a 93-81 win over Illinois on Friday night.

Moore and Beech combined for 10-of-14 shooting from the 3-point line and North Florida never trailed while defeating a Big Ten Conference team for the second-straight season.

Center Mike Thorne Jr. scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Illinois. Malcolm Hill added 20 points, but Illinois lost a season-opener for the first time since 1998.

North Florida, which qualified for the NCAA tournament last season for the first time in school history, led by 23 points at halftime.

Beech made seven of eight from beyond the arc and North Florida was 17 of 33 on 3-point attempts.

Illinois played its first of four games at the Prairie Capital Convention Center while its campus arena is under renovation. Link

IlliniMBB Fights Off Missouri for Braggin' Rights Victory

December 23, 2015

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Malcolm Hill had 21 points, including a basket that ended a scoreless drought of nearly 9-1/2 minutes, and Illinois held off Missouri 68-63 in the annual Braggin' Rights game on Wednesday night.

Kendrick Nunn had 19 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double for Illinois (8-5), which has won five in a row overall and three straight in the neutral site series.

Wes Clark had a career best 21 points with four 3-pointers for Missouri (5-6), which has lost three in a row. Kevin Puryear added 12 points and Russell Woods had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Illinois led 50-30 with 16:13 to go but missed 11 straight shots and three free throws while Missouri climbed back into it with a 15-0 run, including seven points from Clark. Hill drove the baseline to end Illinois' drought with 6:52 to go.

Nunn scored eight points - including back-to-back dunks - in a 14-2 run that put Illinois seemingly in control at 35-21 with 3:39 to go in the first half.

Game Recap: Men's Basketball | January 3, 2016 |

Late Flurry for @IlliniMBB Falls Short In Loss at OSU, 75-73

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Four Fighting Illini scored 14 points in a defensive slugfest against Ohio State, but two late free throws sealed the game for the Buckeyes in a 75-73 Illinois loss on Sunday.

Malcolm Hill, Kendrick Nunn, Jalen Coleman-Lands and Michael Finke all had 14 points.

Marc Loving scored 27 points for Ohio State.

Loving scored six straight points to carry Ohio State from a 61-59 deficit to a 65-61 lead with 2:21 to play thanks to a dunk, a 3-pointer and a foul shot.

OSU held a five-point lead when Finke's tip-in made it 70-67 with 23.3 seconds left. Jae-Sean Tate's slam with 12.6 seconds left made 72-67 before Coleman-Lands hit a trey to pull Illinois (8-7, 0-2) within 72-70.

A pair of Loving free throws upped the score to 74-70 but Hill hit another 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left. Loving made one of two foul shots and a desperation shot from midcourt by Hill at the buzzer missed. Link

Short-Handed @IlliniMBB Falls at No. 5 MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Maverick Morgan had 15 points and Malcolm Hill scored 10 for Illinois.

But it wasn't enough - down their leading scorer and in a hostile environment - in a 79-54 loss at No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday night.

The Illini (8-8, 0-3) didn't have leading-scorer Kendrick Nunn, who the team said stayed in Illinois for the birth of his child.

The Spartans (15-1, 2-1 Big Ten) were without Denzel Valentine for a fourth straight game. Valentine participated in pregame warm-ups and might play at Penn State on Sunday, nearly three weeks after having surgery on his left knee.

Eron Harris scored 13 and Matt McQuaid had a career-high 10 points for the Spartans. Link

This team is a mess. I think Groce is a really good guy, but even factoring in the injuries this team is missing something. I don't think he survives a new AD.

It does seem that way, and I've been a huge supporter of Groce and have always thought you gotta give him at least 1 more year. Unless something turns around big time though, I might be changing that opinion. Although at this point I'm not sure who they will get who is definitely better...

I haven't followed college ball closely enough the last few years to have a short list. However, even though the program is further away from it's glory days it still should be a fairly sought after job. Solid history, a rabid (sometimes delusional) fan base and an athletic department willing to give a new coach everything he needs in order to justify a huge renovation.

Yeah, I'm not one who follows it that closely either to know who would be out there. One other problem is that Groce was their 3rd choice when he got hired and now they are 3 more years removed from then with little more to show for it, so why would they be able to even get their top choice now? Although if they do fire him right now, they have a pretty solid group of guys coming back. Whether there is any merit to that for a coach coming in, I don't know though. I know a new coach just means another missed recruiting class, which is never good...

Delusional is a good word for a decent amount of the fan base lol.

Admittedly their top two choices were Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens. Smart turning them down definitely hurt, but going after Stevens was a sign of desperation and reflected more poorly on the AD than Groce IMO.

Greg Marshall or Archie Miller would probably be at the top of the wish list. I'm not sure if either of them would jump ship to come to Illinois. Otherwise I'd love to see them chase someone from the Tom Izzo coaching tree.

All of this can only happen after they hire an AD of course...

Archie Miller would be unbelievable. I doubt Greg Marshall would do that from what I have heard about him. He is making BANK at Wichita St. Although he is losing a lot of talent after this year, so it is possible he will be looking for another opportunity. He would be great too I think.

Yeah, I put Marshall out there as the equivalent of Brad Stevens 3 years ago. I don't think he leaves Wichita unless it's for one of the elite jobs in the country. If Rick Pitino is forced out of Louisville after the season I think one of those two wind up there, which really hurts the appeal of Illinois coaching vacancy
