I was going to say something about this myself the other but then I forgot to. Old age settin' in ya know

I'm like you guys, I haven't followed the Illini like I did when they had Williams & Brown because they haven't given me any reason to keep up with them. But I'd have to say that Groce's days of coaching the Illini are about over. The question is, if they are, who do they possibly get to take over?

I'm not completely giving up on Groce yet, but it hasn't looked good lately when there should be more signs of improvement.

All I know is, they better bring out the checkbook for their next coach whoever it is. Don't let money be a reason they don't get their guy. Well, after they get an AD that is.

Of course as we talk about all this, they look great in beating Purdue. Hopefully they build off that win and we don't have to worry about a new coach.

Man, if they could get anyone to step up and help Hill and Nunn, I think they could be solid. Someone stepping up by next year will be huge for them.

Agreed. If Thorne had just stayed healthy Illinois could have really been special. Still a chance they could get hot, guess we will see.

Game Recap: Men's Basketball | January 10, 2016 |

Hill, Nunn Lead @IlliniMBB Past No. 20 Purdue, 84-70

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Malcolm Hill scored 30 points and Kendrick Nunn added 22 to lead Illinois past No. 20 Purdue 84-70 on Sunday.

Hill and Nunn were a combined 17 for 27 from the field for the Illini (9-8, 1-3 Big Ten).

Nunn returned after missing Thursday's loss at Michigan State for the birth of his son. He started slowly but scored 18 points in the second half. That included a nine-point run to open the half that turned a 37-all tie into a 46-37 Illinois lead.

Purdue (14-3, 2-2) was led by Caleb Swanigan and P.J. Thompson with 12 points each.

Illinois big men Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan helped hold Purdue's two 7-footers, A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas, to a combined 16 points.

Boilermakers forward Raphael Davis fouled out with 1:49 to play. He didn't score.

With Nunn away for the birth of his son, Kason Lee, Illinois struggled at No. 5 Michigan State, falling 79-54 in a game it was never really in.

I seen somewhere in our local paper the other day that Groce has one more year to turn things around or else! Anybody else hear or read anything about this?

That's what I've heard too. Also heard that the only reason he still has his job is because of the recruiting class he has coming in. So he better hope for a big next year or he is gonna be out.

I agree Hardy, it's just to bad for the Illini that we had to lose Bill Self a few years back, cause look at what he's done for Kansas! But even with Groce's recruiting class coming in, & no matter how good they may be, miracles more than likely aren't going to happen within a years time!

Self and also even Kruger before him. Lost him to the NBA and since he has come back, look what he did with Oklahoma. 2 pretty poor coaches after 2 really really good ones.

I'd say two incomplete coaches as much as anything. Weber was a strong X's and O's guy who couldn't recruit. Groce is a strong recruiter who doesn't call a great game. His teams also seem to have serious motivational issues based on the mental meltdowns they suffer late in games. That kind of stuff has prevented Groce from getting a true centerpiece recruit that puts him on the map IMO.

If the team has to dump Black, Tate and Nunn, they'll be hard pressed to improve next year. Even with Thorne and Abrams being healthy and a strong freshmen class.

Even when Weber did get top talent, he didn't know what to do with it. He was a great mid major coach, but moving up and dealing with the egos of top players, the task of motivating them with a team first mentality, and the pressure to win every single year is another thing and he just didn't have it. He went to Kansas St and hasn't done anything there since he left Illinois.

I dunno that I'd even call Groce a strong recruiter. I didn't (and still don't) think that Self was a very good game coach, but he used to pull top recruiting classes every year and was GREAT at developing them into very good players that could overcome many of his in game mistakes. Groce isn't anywhere close to that point. And he might be worse than Self was with in game coaching. We'll see how next year's freshman class looks. That will pretty much make or break him having a job going forward.

I don't think they will have Thorne back next year either. He was a graduate senior and played too many games to redshirt I have to assume. I definitely don't think they can just dump all 3 of them and have any chance at being good, but you gotta start somewhere on getting the culture right. I dunno, he is in a really tough spot right now. 1 more bad year (on or off the court) and he is gone.
