2015 (British) Open Championship

Postby R27 » Thu Jul 16, 2015 12:31 pm

Jordan Spieth is going for his third straight major victory after winning The Masters and the US Open and sits two strokes back of the leader right now after his opening round. There are still a few guys around him with a few holes left, so that could possibly change by the end of the day, but it's a good start.

I'd love to see him do it. I think he needs to just hang around and then win it on the final day though. If he leads the tournament going into Sunday, there will be a lot more pressure to think about.

Really sets up some good Jordan v Rory storylines that would be good for golf down the road, even though Rory isn't playing this weekend.

Amateur Jordan Niebrugge tied the record for lowest score ever by an amateur at St. Andrews for the British open. His parents went to the same small town high school as I did and that last name is VERY common in my hometown of 1600 people. Just 2 shots off the leader, tied with Spieth through 1 round. Obviously super early but still pretty cool.

That is pretty cool. You may not be able to win a tournament on Day 1, but you sure can lose one. Great start.

Oosthuizen shot in the 70s the first day of the US Open. If he'd shot in the 60s he'd have won the tournament by four or five strokes and the drama of Spieth and Johnson missing their shots on 17 and 18 down the stretch on Sunday wouldn't have existed.

Several dozen players returned to the course early this morning to complete the second round.

But after only 32 minutes, play was halted again because of high winds. Winds are gusting up to 40 mph, and are not expected to calm significantly until the afternoon.

Players are complaining that the R&A never should have restarted play in such blustery conditions. Spieth was on the front of the green at the par-5 14th and Johnson was just a few yards behind him. Spieth 3 - putted for par while Johnson took 4 to get up 'n down for a bogey after his ball blew off the green before he could mark it. Ridic.

Some very compelling storylines this morning. Can Spieth win the 3rd leg of the Grand Slam? Will we have our first amateur champion since Bobby Jones 85 years ago? Can Jason Day win his 1st Major? Could Sergio finally break through? Is there magic left for Harrington or Goosen?

I think the winner comes out of the final two pairings and I don't think it'll be the amateur. I picked Spieth last week at 273 (-15 under). I'm stickin' with Spieth but if the weather doesn't turn bad he'll have to go lower than that. Guys are on the course now going low.

14 Players within 3 shots, half of those are Major winners.

T1 -- Paul Dunne (a) -12 8:30 am

T6 -- Marc Leishman -9
T6 -- Jordan Niebrugge (a) -9 8 am

T6 -- Retief Goosen -9
T6 -- Robert Streb -9 7:40 am

Zach Johnson Wins The Open

Spieth 4-putts from 100 feet for a double on 8, ends up 1 shot back & misses the playoff & shot at Grand Slam. .

Heard he had 6 3-putts and that 4-putt in the 4 days. Was on his game everywhere except the green, and he still almost won. Unreal.

Was traveling this weekend. Crazy how one or two little mistakes are the key.

Disappointed Spieth won't get his shot at sweeping the majors this year, but he'll be around for years to come.
