Spam Issues

So we've had a bout of spam issues and many have gotten spam PMs in this latest round. I changed the registration verification question a few weeks ago after we had a several accounts show up, but that didn't seem to stem the tide. I'll be updating the site tonight, so while I'm doing that the site will go down for a little bit. Hopefully that will fix our problems.

If you get a spam PM, please use the report tool to report it. It's the button with the ! on the icon. That provides me with a copy of the PM and lets me see if I can sort out how to prevent them. I know a couple people have noted that they've gotten them.

I think what R27 mentioned above is if you'll hit the exclamation mark icon at top right of post page - ! - ('Report this post') on 'em, then R27 can look at 'em & try to block the source so they don't have subsequent access.

You can simply look on page #4 to see who to block. Yesterday it was Michelon posting spam. Everyone listed from Poland should be blocked. The person who registered today also. All need to be blocked....then they will reappear under a new name.

#PolishPostersMatter

But I would say unless it's a situation where there are a ton of them, flag them and I'll deal with it. I'll comb through the posters at some point this week and weed out and review the spam protection. And here I thought I'd outsmarted bots who were smart enough to ask Google the answer to the human verification question.

With the last spammer I removed, I discovered a pattern with a couple others, so hopefully stem the tide a bit.

Is there any advantage to catching them logged-on?

Not really. Obviously I want any posts it's made hanging out as short as possible, but there isn't an advantage as far as stopping them.

The three main ways to block are IP, username, and email. And the software records all of that for every visit. It's all about finding patterns in their registration details to minimize the holes.
