Kolten Wong signs an extension ($25.5M/5 + opt)

Postby R27 » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:24 am

The Cardinals will be announcing a multi-year contract extension with 2B Kolten Wong today. No terms yet, announcement is at 11:45 ET.

Smart move, I think. He's gotten better every year. And he might have felt pressure to push too much with Gyorko now in house.

Edit: Derrick Goold reporting that it is a five year deal with a team option for a sixth.

It was being talked about online that this extension buys out his arbitration years. Haven't seen anything concrete on that yet though.

Yeah, Derrick Goold just reported it's a five year deal. So it will cover this year, three arbitration years, and one free agent year.

Edit: Plus a team option sixth year.

It's out there.

No terms yet but I gotta think it isn't expensive at all considering he really hasn't broken out yet statistics wise.

Yeah, I was thinking about it. I imagine it's probably around $30 million over 5? That'd be my guess.

Nice move, I still believe this kid is on the brink of stardom. He has all of the tools you want, he simply has to put them all together. I think this will be the year that he does that.

There are reports of $60/5 and $90/5 on Twitter for the deal. I call BS on both reports. No way its that much.

I was hearing it is similar to the deal Craig signed (5/$31M). If so, your original guess was right on the money R27.

Anything over $40M and you've got to question the decision IMO. He could break out and be awesome, but there is still a good chance he could just never figure it out. There is a reason why Gyrko is around as a platoon partner heading into the season.

In a discussion on Twitter about it. If you take year-to-year, I don't expect Wong to cost you more than $20 million over his three arb years. So that leaves $40M/2 for the remaining two years? One of which he'll be making maybe $600k? No way it gets to $60 million.

For reference, Carpenter's deal signed before the 2014 season was signed at the same point and pays him $35.5 million over the first five years. No way Wong gets more than that.

And the answer. This guy had the Leake signing first.

Good to lock him up. Agree this could be a breakout year for him. The kid is only going to get better. Especially when he learns to handle the ups and downs of the game internally.

Sounds like a $12.5 million option for 2021 too. Almost guaranteed that gets picked up.

Also, if he goes to the end of this, that'll be 8 years with the same second baseman. I don't think we've had that kind of consistency at second base in my lifetime.

That's a solid signing. If he breaks out and becomes an all-star, that's a huge bargain. If he keeps playing at his current level, it's not a back-break contract. Financial security and cost certainty. Everybody wins, good for Kolten.

Probably not since Red, Frisch or Hornsby.
