2016 "Be the GM" Season Thread

Postby EOCF » Mon Mar 21, 2016 5:25 pm

Hopefully this will be something of a catch-all thread for the opinions and smaller story lines within the season and reduce potential clutter on the main page.

If you want to rant about how Matt Adams needs to be sent back to A-ball to learn how to hit a curve, this is the place.

If you think Mo needs to trade for Mike Trout right now and want to list how he can do it, this is the place.

If you just saw a Tweet from Buster Olney that instead of trading for Trout, the Cardinals are finalizing a deal to bring Pete Kozma back to try him in the outfield, that is probably something worthy of the rumors thread (but if you want to rant about Kozma coming back, THIS is the place!).

With Walden going down, I think it's safe to assume the bullpen will look like this on Opening Day.

CL: Rosenthal
SU: Siegrist
SU: Oh
RHP: Manness
RHP: Broxton
RHP: Tui/MarGo/Cooney
LHP: Lyons

Thoughts? I'm guessing they'll take the extra man on the bench over the extra guy in the bullpen.

Matt Bowman got the last bullpen spot, which really isn't shocking. Cooney and Gonzales are better served adding rotation depth at Memphis than in the bullpen. And there's probably a decent chance that they can keep him throughout the year with the Walden injury.

I think it's about time to send Kolten to AAA for a while to get his swing worked out. I'd rather see Garcia getting the starts at 2B right now.

I'd just like to see a set lineup for once. Matheny has somewhat been a little better here as of late, especially with the 1st five. I'm afraid IF Grichuck doesn't get things turned around soon he's going to find himself coming off the bench when Pham does come back! And God help Matheny with his IF decisions upon Peralta's return! Won't somebody have to be sent down? If so, who?

We were talking about that in the Peralta thread. Obvious answer is that it's Tejada going away somehow.

And Pham would be back up already if the plan was to bring him back. Right now he's not going to get another chance unless someone gets hurt or they decide to dump Hazelbaker (which, even though he's hit .179 in May, he has 7 HR right now so that'll earn him some leash). Grichuk has actually put together a solid May, hitting .259/.344/.407. Behind Piscotty, he's been the Cardinals' second best outfielder this month.

But as is typical, if you slump out of the gate, it usually takes a month, at least, to see the impact in your overall numbers.

The Cards had an anemic offense last season, lost Heyward & only added Gyrko. Even with Grichuk scuffling, Molina barely having 1 HR & Peralta having zero the Cardinals have 71 home run this year. After 53 games last season, they had hit 40 on their way to137, more than only five other teams. They are on pace to hit 218 home runs this season, which would be the team's highest home run total since 2000 when Mark McGwire hit 32 at age 36 and Jim Edmonds hit 42.

Well, we added more than just Gyorko.

Hazelbaker (7), Gyorko (6), and Diaz (7) are all guys that didn't play for the Cards last year. Replacing Heyward (13), Jay (1), and Kozma (0). Those new three have 6 more home runs than the three guys they replaced on the roster did all last year.

Plus have Piscotty for a full season instead of just the partial that we had him for last year. And Holliday and Adams not injured. Plus Moss. And guys just hitting much more to their potential than they did last year other than Grichuk.

By "added" I meant 'acquired' fyi. We pretty much 'stood pat' on acquisitions, which led to quite a bit of doomsday predictions from many faithful. It may play-out to be true by season's end, but many of us here & there did not see the pieces that would substantially improve last year's offense.

Yeah, I was just pointing out guys that didn't play for the team last year.

I thought we'd be better on offense, but not this much better.

Compared to the first 53 games of last season, the Cardinals have scored 75 more runs and allowed 84 more runs this year.

Remember all those tight, low-scoring, 1-run Wins last season?

Our staff ERA has sky rocketed and our defense has been very poor. The season is still early, our boys can still turn it around.... So here is a big dilemma, about to occur. What do you do with Peralta, when he returns? Maybe move Diaz to 2nd base? Or keep Diaz at SS, move Peralta to 3rd and let Carp play 2nd???
