The Leak acquisition is looking better, now that he has 2 quality starts in a row, in September, crunch time! The time he missed, from being ill, with the shingles, may have actually helped. Pitchers arms, in September tend to get tired. The break, may have helped him.

Alex Reyes looked incredible today. He has great stuff and when he gets into jams, he remains poised and pitches his way out of them. This was his second quality start in a row, as well. (based on his last 2 starts, 9/2 was his previous start).

One would expect (hope) working up here with Yadi will help him. With all his talent his ERA in Memphis was 4.96, a WHIP of 1.45. He gave up a hit per inning & a walk every two innings. Last week in relief of Garcia he had 6 walks in 4-1/3.

So I agree, he looked incredible. Let's hope Yadi & Waino can mentor him and he can be great.

To put our pitching in perspective - of the 6 NL teams in the postseason hunt we have the highest team ERA, WHIP & BAA.

When I watched this yesterday, I was thinking immediately about Reyes.

So ........... I give Weaver no more starts.

I go back to Garcia & back him up with Wacha.

No real good options, but I agree that Weaver looks to be figured out.

Pitching:

What is something, the 2016 Cardinals...don't have:

Correct!

Garcia allows 6 runs a start to, we know him, we know he cant pitch. Maybe this kid weaver can, we don't know yet. I agree, Weaver needs to make an adjustment pitching wise, but..if you allow 6 unearned runs in a start, it means our defense is not up to par either. If we were to go back to say 2002 when we picked up an injured pitcher, who had a unimpressive line of:

career 4.50 E.R.A, 49-50 W-L

Would, you let him pitch in your rotation?

Answer to whom...here

Not going to spoil your example, but it creates an interesting talking point.

That guy (Player A) who had a career 4.83 ERA and 49-50 record in your example was a guy who had a history of shoulder problems and had trouble staying healthy.

We have a guy (Player B) right now with a career 3.55 ERA, 62-44 record who has a history of shoulder problems and trouble staying healthy. And most everyone seems to want him gone.

And interesting that Player B is the same age this year as Player A was in his first season in St. Louis.

Reminder: We got Player A for $300K. Big power pitcher.

Player B will cost us $12M ($11.5M net) to keep for 1 year. Diminutive 'feel' pitcher, added value as a lefty.

Big question for me is what's the condition of Wacha, MarGo & Lyons? You've got CMart, Waino, Leake, Lynn, Reyes. Is Wacha looked at as a starter still or not? Are MarGo & Lyons in the mix?

I'm not pushing Garcia towards the door simply because he's had a rough, inconsistent year & injury-plagued career. I'm opening the discussion within the totality of our starting staff circumstance & his contract status with it's $500K buyout.

I haven't given up on Garcia for next season. He was pitching alright until he hit a innings count he hasn't seen in a few years. His ineffectiveness may have just been from fatigue. For next season, I keep as many pitchers as possibly because of all the question marks. Will Leake regain his form, does Lynn bounce back, injuries from Cooney, Lyons, Marco, are Reyes and Weaver ready, is Waino still Waino. I'd treat Wacha like they did Woody Williams a few years ago. Put him on a strict pitch count and spot start him every so often, or long relief in the pen.

Old saying is, you can't have too much pitching and that's true. I'd probably try to trade Broxton for a bag of balls and go with Tui or Soco. Other than that, no major changes.

Who's the fifth starter: Weaver or Garcia?

If Jamie Garcia, wants to come back to this club...I would give him another shot.....just not at 12 million dollars. Id sign Jamie, to a heavy incentive laden contract, which is probably what hed get on the open market...max value for me? 7 million a year guesstimate, until he proves himself health wise. Let Lynn, Reyes,Weaver and Garcia battle it out for rotation spots

Rotation:

1: Empty(could fill via FA market?)
2: Martinez
3: Leake
4: Empty
5: Empty

those who lose out on rotation spots...go to bullpen. If Waino shows me he's healthy again, obviously you plug him in rotation. but, as of this date and time of Post. I'm honestly unsure, for the first time regarding our former ACE Adam Wainwright

I'm still fairly certain Garcia could get a 1/$12M deal on the open market. That's just not that much for a decent starter these days. I pick it up and move him later if it works out that way.
