Wed vs Reds - Mike Leake
Thurs vs Reds - Alex Reyes
Fri vs Pirates - CMart
Sat vs Pirates - ????
Sun vs Pirates - Waino

Mon play-in game - Mike Leake
Tues play-in game - Alex Reyes
Wed Wild Card Game - CMart

Friday - NLDS Game 1 @ Cubs - ????

It could be whoever wins the Reds YNOT. With it being a home day game, my gut says Garcia starts and the others will be shortly behind just like Monday.

If CMart starts the Wild Card game as he should, I can't see Matheny going with anyone other than Wainwright for game 1 of the NLDS, just for the experience factor.

I think you keep it on order just like that, and roll this into the NLDS (if you win the Wild Card Game).

NLDS Game 1 - Waiwnright
NLDS Game 2 - Leake
NLDS Game 3 - Martinez
NLDS Game 4 - Reyes
NLDS Game 5 - Wainwright

As far as Saturday against the Pirates? I roll the dice and go with Jerome Williams. He's the only starter who will be available to pitch that day who hasn't actually failed at starting this season.

This isn't remotely surprising. Mike hasn't had a great year, you could even say he's regressed as a manager. Four playoff berths in four years and the possibility for a fifth despite a disappointing season is hard to argue with though. Maybe the club wins despite him, but they're clearly not struggling only because of him.

Matheny has received criticism for his bullpen usage, but the Cardinals have only 15 blown saves as a team, the fourth-lowest total in MLB.

What's transpired this season is a little disturbing. The lack of inspired play, the poor fundamentals and the poor home record are alarming. Since they've decided to keep Matheny, I think a major shake up is in order.

They cannot run out this same group and expect to have a different result.

If the call were mine, I'd be willing to discuss almost every player in trade talks. The only untouchables at this point for me would be Diaz, Martinez and Reyes. The rest of the roster could be available at the right price.

I add Molina to your list. Molina MUST retire a Cardinal.

Yeah 0 chance Molina gets traded. I'd also add Carpenter and Piscotty to that as I don't see them getting enough of a return to justify trading away your best hitters if you still want to compete next year. If they decide to rebuild, then sure Carpenter is available, but I'd very much disagree with that decision. Other than that though, I'd agree.

I'd add Siegrist and Oh. Possibly Rosenthal.

I think MT's point, as well as mine, is if you blew up the team - who's 'untouchable'. Not based on a likely deal or trade analysis but simply who you would not put on the table at all.

I see that core list as he does - Diaz, CMart & Reyes. I add Molina as a player as well as a key to the historical welfare of the franchise.

I accidentally left Molina off. Upon further review, I'd add Piscotty to my untouchable list. I think we have the stuff to be a really good team next year, but that infield defense needs to be shored up in a big way.

If Carpenter can get you an infielder with a good glove, I'd make a move. Gyrko and Adams can do enough at first.

I'd inquire about Chase Headley. Not great with the stick, but he's a veteran with a very good glove at third.

I'd try to flip Wong for an arm or two and then go from there.

Defense is a big need for this team right now. Cardinals are 22nd in defensive efficiency (basically a reverse BABIP, how good are teams at turning balls hit in play into outs?). Notably, the Cubs are #1.

Diaz still needs to improve at shortstop to stick there, IMO. I'd much rather see a rangy shortstop there. It's too bad that Zack Cozart had knee issues late this year. Otherwise, I'd be interested in knocking on the Reds' door and see what could be there. If you can't make Diaz better, you can put better defenders around him to make up for it.

Wong is still a good defender at second and has ultimately had his best defensive season in the big leagues this year. He's a +5 defensive runs saved, was +5 defensive runs saved last season in twice as many innings.

Third base needs outside help. Carpenter should be at first (or in left) and Gyorko's defensive stats are like Peralta's first season with the Cardinals, IMO, a mirage. Luis Valbuena could be an interesting look. Hit .260/.357/.459 with 13 HR this season in about 350 PAs for Houston. Hit 25 HRs last year. A couple good years for the Cubs before that. Plus defender. Valbuena's a lefty too, so that gives you a place you can cycle Gyorko in regularly. Justin Turner has had a good year in LA and is a free agent too.

I'd leave Diaz where he's at. He's gotten better and with Oquendo hopefully back next year, we should see him improve.

If Wong is not traded, keeping him in place at second would suffice.

Justin Turner is very intriguing. I didn't really know that he was much of a deep ball threat.

I haven't seen a defensive problem with Diaz since he settled-in the 1st couple months.

If the team decides to keep Wong, I'd like to see Mo and Matheny stop screwing around with the kid. Let him play, let him know that he doesn't have to look over his shoulder whenever he makes a mistake.

A little bit of confidence in him would likely go a long way.

Overall, I'd like to see a more stable and predictable lineup. This year we've had far too many people playing too many positions. It's impossible to get any cohesion when you have no idea where or if your going to play.

Matheny has gotta do better.
