Adios Matt, thanks for everything.

Jon Heyman reports that the Cardinals do not plan to exercise Matt Holliday‘s $17 million option for 2017.
And, not surprisingly, will not extend him a similarly priced qualifying offer, either.

Matt Holliday issued the following statement today after learning that the Cardinals
do not plan to exercise his $17-million option:

I would like to thank Mr. DeWitt, Mo and the entire ownership group for the
opportunity to play for the St. Louis Cardinals.

I am proud of what we have accomplished on and off the field during the past seven
years. I have also been humbled by the incredible support and participation in our
Homers for Health program.

It has been an honor to play in front of such great fans and for such an historic
organization. I can honestly say it has been a dream come true.

While I'm disappointed this could be it here in St. Louis, I understand that it
might be time to move on.

I'd like to express my love and admiration for Tony, Mike, and all of the coaches
and staff that I have had the pleasure to do life with these past 7+ years.

The most emotional part of this is my teammates and the relationships I've built
with some of these guys over the years. Particularly, Adam and Yadi, to be
considered part of the core with two of the finest human beings I've ever known.

Finally, I'm eternally thankful for the Lord bringing me to the city of St. Louis in
August of 2009. Lots of cool stuff has happened since then. On behalf of my wife
Leslee and our children, Jackson, Ethan, Gracyn and Reed - Thank you!

Matt

General manager John Mozeliak said the Cardinals will activate Holliday from the disabled list on Friday in order to give the veteran outfielder an opportunity to salute the fans with one final appearance.

How the Cardinals script that appearance will be tricky, as Holliday remains compromised by his surgically-repaired right thumb.

By all accounts, ALL ACCOUNTS, Holliday has been one of the most community-involved, charitably-involved, IN-PERSON Cardinals EVER around the St Louis area with NO EFFORT at publicity or recognition. In-fact, he apparently insists his actions are as low-key as possible.

First move toward next season has been made....and it just doesn't set well with me. Would much rather have Holliday than Moss....

Matt Holliday is a class act. I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes. But I think the Cardinals made the right move. His OPS has been in steady decline for the last seven years. His body is riddled with injuries and that salary is simply to much to pay for sentiment.

I'd normally like to see him back for less than 17M. But then we would have to worry about Matheny starting him and batting him 3rd every day. So maybe best if it doesn't happen.

The team is also overloaded with corner outfielders and guys you would prefer to see in a corner spot. Piscotty is locked into RF. If Moss is brought back, he's probably the guy in LF. Otherwise you'd love to find a reason to move Grichuk or Carpenter over there and upgrade the defense at 3B or CF. Which brings me to my next point.

Pham is the only natural center fielder on the roster. Grichuk can pass out there and unless a big move happens to bring new guy to the position he's probably your starter there in 2017. Either way, Holliday's bat could still be an asset to the team, but his position and the way he'd likely be used wouldn't be.

Holliday's only problem this season was really that he wasn't getting the singles. His other hit numbers were as good as ever, if not better (in the case of HRs).

2010-2014 xBH Rate: 9.8%
2016 xBH Rate: 9.6%

2010-2014 HR Rate: 3.8%
2016 HR Rate: 4.7%

2010-2014 1B Rate: 15.9%
2016 1B Rate: 12.2%

I'd have ultimately been fine bringing him back, but I feel like letting him go is the right call.
