Goold says that the Cardinals went "over the top" to make sure a deal got done. Heyman is reporting $80-90 million over 5 years. Deal is now being reported as done pending physical. Hope is to close it out tomorrow. Likely an afternoon presser tomorrow.

And just after I wrote a column this morning telling Mo that it was time to go. If Fowler was your guy, go get him. Good or bad, I'm taking the credit for this one.

Someone said tonight that Fowler is basically Heyward for half the price. I was going to correct them until I thought about it. And yeah, very similar players. Over the last 3 years,

Fowler: .266/.369/.419, 38 HR, 132 xBH, 397 G
Heyward: .265/.339/.383, 31 HR, 125 xBH, 445 G

More consistent too. Over the last 6 years, Fowler has been league average or above every year. Heyward, only 4 of the last 6.

Done deal per Bob Nightengale. Assuming he passes the physical, press conference tomorrow morning in St. Louis to introduce him.

meh.....really wasnot much in FA market that could upgrade this team from "loser"(setting at home) to "playoffs". Still had to do something to try and they still gotta do more to try. cubs still have that window open...unfortunately.

What the hell is it gonna take for you man? The Cards just signed one of the top 5 available free agents to a huge contract which will dramatically increase payroll for the next few years. Something they hardly EVER do. You've become worse than Def ever was. Even he'd be doing back flips over this.

its not always about "how much player X s paid" its about "What can player X do to help" not upset with move not excited either. its true, its something this franchise never does...not even with any one of their own. Maybe its because with my job, I cant watch baseball like Id use to, Im just on a even keel. Fowlers not a "franchise altering player" to me. .

There are no franchise altering players in free agency this year.

I guess you just shouldn't watch them in 2017.

After a picture of Dexter Fowler boarding a flight from Las Vegas to St. Louis surfaced on social media, MLB.com confirmed through sources that Fowler was en route to St. Louis to undergo a physical, which he passed on Thursday night. An agreement between the Cardinals and Fowler is already in place, and the team is poised to hold a Friday morning news conference at Busch Stadium that will air on MLB.com at 10 CT.

I don't mind overpaying, but I do hope it is front loaded similar to what they did with Peralta. When he gets on the other side of 35, I'd rather be paying him closer to $10 mil than $20 mil.

Fowler in the fold is huge. Now we need to round out the bench including back-up catcher. What to do with Adams, if anything. Do we keep Peralta, or see if there is anyone who wants him (for chevy's sake )?

I guess the bullpen will sort itself out in ST. Disappointed in hearing Oh may not want to re-sign and likely wants to move on from STL. We'll see how that develops.

At the end of next year Oh will be almost 36. I don't care if he doesn't want to resign after next season.

I hope the next move is for a guy that will either add pop or a great glove. The choices being either Encarnacion or Turner. I think Turner there is some doubt about the legitimacy of his power. But his glove cannot be denied. If he can shore up the left side of the infield, what he might lack in run production can be made up with run prevention.

Encarnacion would provide pop and be an upgrade to Moss, but he won't help much defensively.

Agree on both. Especially at this point only costing a 2nd round pick. But I think the only way they would add one of them is if one of Wong/Gyorko/Peralta is traded.

I think it's more that Oh wants to go to free agency than he doesn't want to be a Cardinal. He'll be 35 years old and has just one opportunity to cash in in free agency.

Derrick Goold, I think it was, said this week that getting to free agency was important to Oh. It's why his deal was 1 year and an option rather than a deal that would have likely kept him in STL for the rest of his career.
