IMO, the team's best bet to improving the team right now is on defense. Turner would be the best defensive third baseman the team has had since Rolen. And if Diaz improved a little bit, you could have a shot at duplicating the Cubs' 2016 feat of having all 8 starters post a plus defensive runs saved. And that would be huge for the pitching staff.

Encarnacion & Trumbo are nice, but their bat is the only way they can contribute to the team. If Turner's bat goes away, he's still a plus defender.

With the Angels now picking up Espinoza, if I'm Mo, I'm calling them about a deal involving Wong and Simmons. Clearly would have to include more, but Simmons at SS and Diaz at 2B would be pretty amazing IMO.

Espinoza is likely to play second for them. Rumor has it, the Angels inquired about Wong a couple weeks ago.

Right. But Espinoza plays an above average SS as well so he could fill in if Simmons were traded, something they didn't have before getting him.

Sounds like Turner is headed back to LA at $65/4. Just a touch less per than Fowler.

IMO, big mistake for the Cardinals to not go get him. Defensively, compared with last year for Peralta at 3rd, Turner would be a +22 improvement in defensive runs saved over the course of the season.

For whatever reason, the Cards just don't seem concerned about using Peralta and Gyrko there full time. There isn't an obvious replacement ready in the minors for 2018 either so I'm not sure why they weren't more focused on Turner than they were.

From an offensive angle, I'm not too concerned either. I expect both Peralta and Gyorko to be between a 100-110 OPS+ next season. It's the defense I get most worried about. To go out and say, "Hey, we need to improve our defense." And then leave the biggest defensive liability you have on the field. A little baffling to me.

Man as time goes on and I read about how Encarnacion's market has just collapsed, the more I hope Mo is really considering something similar to what Cespedes got last year. Give him a 3 year deal for 60-70M with an opt out after year 1, paying him the most in the first year. Then if he has a great year, he likely opts out into another pretty weak FA class. If he doesn't have a great year, he might stay but at a lesser price. You only lose a 2nd round pick now too. Adding him to the middle of this lineup would make them VERY dangerous as that type of bat is pretty much what the team is missing at this point. And really it won't make the defense much worse, if at all. Peralta is pretty brutal at 3B, Carpenter is pretty bad everywhere, Encarnacion has been slightly below average.

Fowler - CF
Diaz - SS
Carpenter - 3B
Encarnacion - 1B
Piscotty - RF
Grichuk - LF
Yadi - C
Wong - 2B

Putting Encarnacion in there instead of Peralta is a pretty huge change for the better.

Turner was always headed back to LA. Having him @ 3B for the Redbirds was a pipe dream unfortunately.... 8-)

$30M in year 1, exit clause between year 1 and 2, $15M each in year 2 and 3. Virtual lock to exit after year 1. And even if he doesn't, that's a deal.

Very probable you aren't tied to a bad deal for more than a season. Matt Leach once told me that teams don't care as much about committing dollars as much as committing years.

That sounds perfect to me. Forward it to Mo and let's get this moving!

Encarnacion is signing with the Indians for pretty much the deal that was described. Bummer.
