Official: Cardinals' Offseason News Thread

Postby EOCF » Fri Oct 14, 2016 4:03 pm

This thread is specifically for actual news reports regarding the Cardinals. No rumors, no speculation. Just a straight up discussion of moves the organization has confirmed to be happening. I'll start us off.

Cardinals Outright Harris, Rosario, Ohlman

The Cardinals did some housecleaning on their 40-man roster Thursday by outrighting righthanded pitcher Mitch Harris and catchers Alberto Rosario and Mike Ohlman to Class AAA Memphis.

Ohlman still has potential, but aged out of AA. I'd rather see him or Kelly as Molina's backup, but they're not going to eat the money owed to Pena at this point. Rosario is journeyman who was only on the roster because the club was desperate for catching depth later in the year. Neither have an obvious future with the club. Harris missed all of 2016 with TJ surgery. I think a lot of us would like to see him back, but like the other two, not an obvious spot for him in St. Louis.

The injury bug for 2017 has begun a bit early:

Zach Duke to miss the 2017 season

Lefty reliever Zach Duke, who made 28 appearances for the Cardinals after being
acquired on July 31, will not make another in 2017.

General manager John Mozeliak confirmed that Duke recently underwent surgery to
repair his ulnar collateral ligament as well as a forearm flexor muscle in his left
arm. Recovery from the surgery is expected to take between 12 and 18 months.

“It’s definitely disappointing. He did a really good job for us, and I was looking
at him as being a key member of that bullpen,” Mozeliak said. “We’ll look at it and
figure out how to best solve this moving forward.”

This news has already thrown a wrinkle in the Cardinals’ developing offseason plans,
as it will force the organization, Mozeliak acknowledged, to look more seriously at
the reliever market.

"After pitching six times in a seven-day span"

My God I had no idea this happened. He already led the league in appearances and then at the end of the year is used like this?

Derrick May, a longtime member of the Cardinals’ organization who has mostly worked with hitters in the minor leagues, will be leaving the organization.

May served the Cardinals in the major leagues this past season as the assistant hitting coach.
