While the Cards were wrapping up their first official workout, Alex Reyes was heading to a nearby clinic to undergo an MRI exam on his right elbow. He first notified the Redbirds of arm discomfort late last week, and the club recommended the imaging scan after running Reyes through a physical exam at their complex on Tuesday morning.

The Cardinals plan to announce the results of that scan on Wednesday, though they immediately expressed concern about potential outcomes.

Reyes has been pitching with a compromised ligament in his right elbow since at least 2013, when he was diagnosed with an elbow strain. He made his season debut on June 20 of that year.

I think it was Derrick Goold pointed out yesterday that Wainwright had pitched on a compromised ligament in his elbow since high school before it went in 2011. So you can pitch just fine.

Though, as an organization, if you know you have a top minor league pitcher with a compromised ligament, I'd offer them an incentive to go ahead and get that taken care of so that when they do arrive in the Majors, they're at 100% and not at the same level of risk of blowing it out. I'm sure there are serious downsides I'm not considering, but the premise seems sound.

JUPITER, Fla. -- Top-ranked pitching prospect Alex Reyes will miss the 2017 season after an MRI revealed a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Reyes, 22, underwent the imaging test on Tuesday after notifying the Cardinals of elbow discomfort. The scan was examined by team physician Dr. George Paletta, who confirmed that Reyes requires Tommy John surgery. The images have been sent to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion, but the Cardinals do not expect the diagnosis to change.
General manager John Mozeliak said Reyes will likely have the surgery on Thursday. It will be performed by Paletta.
"It's obviously very disappointing," Mozeliak said. "We had very high expectations for him, but I guess if you're going to look from a timing standpoint, he has a year to do his rehab and get everything that he's dealing with under control. And hopefully he'll be back better than ever."

Reyes will be twice the pitcher Martinez will ever be(and im not knocking Carlos by any means), just one has a head start on the other. Always said Martinez is a #2 type, Reyes has always been projected to be our ace

If Reyes will be twice of what Martinez's best will be, Reyes will be one of the greatest pitchers the game has ever seen. There aren't many 10-11 WAR pitchers...

Martinez was a top 10 pitcher in the MLB last year. He is an ace.

I do hope something occurs in your life, or you meet someone who inspires you to the point where you can have a positive outlook and be happy. It must be difficult to be so negative, but I guess for some this is where they are content.... 8-)

How does a guy with 2 months/46 innings of MLB experience, who wasn't even a projected likelihood in this year's rotation, become your 'Ace'? You were a guy who argued for years that there were only a handful of "true Aces" in all of MLB and continually cited Verlander or Kershaw as the standard for that classification. Constantly told us all this franchise had no true Ace for years now. Today a kid with 46 innings under his belt was our Ace because it fits a doomsday narrative now that he's toast for the year?

Man ............ with that level of hyperbolic sensationalism you should anchor a couple-hour daily report on CNN ........................

This is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. The amount of hate in this country, on both sides of the aisle, is absolutely unacceptable.

Give it a rest, Fowler did nothing nor said nothing wrong. Grow the $%^# up people.

Best part is that all the same kind of comments (and perhaps worse) came from a Cubs page run by the same exact people. But it's all Cardinals' fans who say these sorts of things.

Double Birds always has a good take on this stuff: Just be honest about what you're doing

Fowler didn't even talk politics. He was asked if a policy had impacted his family, given that his wife is Iranian, he said it had and explained how it had. He didn't advocate for change or take a political stance on it. He called the fact that it's separating them from his wife's family "unfortunate." That's it. And if you don't think a little girl not getting an opportunity to see her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins isn't "unfortunate" you're the one with the problem.

The comments directed about Fowler are disgusting. It doesn't make a difference what team the disgusting fools that made those comments made support. The fact that the comments were made are just awful.

But this is where we are today. Maybe it was better when people kept there horrific social and political views to themselves.
