I'm on record saying I'd fire Matheny and promote David Bell to manager in a heartbeat, especially now that Bell is drawing some managerial interest. But the number of guys I'd take over Matheny is very short.

Torn on it. I'd have liked to see what he learned from not being the division leader down the stretch and how that changes how he manages the season.

Agreed to the second part. This is a big year for him. He took a big step back last year with managing IMO. The team doesn't have to win 100 games and the division next year but he needs to make fewer head scratching decisions.

I know you don't let a manager get into the last year of his contract, but 3 years? I'm sure it won't hinder a decision to fire him if they wanted to go that route still, but he definitely needs to improve...

Coaching staff announced too

Sounds like David Bell, Derek Lilliquist, and John Mabry will all return.

Bill Mueller returns to assistant hitting coach after being first base coach last year.

Oliver Marmol, manager the last two years in Palm Beach, promoted to first base coach.

Mike Shildt, manager in Memphis last year, will serve as Quality Control Coach. He's previously been likened to George Kissell, so we can only hope that improves the defense.

Chris Maloney was the only one that didn't get a note of his own (and IMO, the only one that who absolutely needed a role change), but the article said all others are expected to return to their roles.

Genius Joe Maddon:

Idiotic move to have Chapman in game 6 with a 5 run lead & again with a 7 run lead. Threw 97 pitches over 3 consecutive nights. Cost 'em.

Idiotic move to pull a dominating Hendricks in 5th inning of Game 7 at 63 pitches for a guy who cannot field his position and hadn't relieved in 10 years. Cost 'em.

Ended up getting away with it overall, but only because Cleveland was without their #2 & #3 starting pitchers for the postseason & simply ran out of arms.

Horrendous moves in both Games 6 & Game 7 by Maddon. Got away with it.

Just as Tito screwed up by not bunting in a 2nd run early in Game 5 down 3-1.

None of these guys are perfect. They all make some boneheaded moves.

Add in pitching Miller 2 innings in game 4 with a 6 run (turned to 5) lead.

Two likely HOF managers not on top of their games.

Cardinals Will Not Make Qualifying Offer To Brandon Moss

The Cardinals won’t be extending a qualifying offer to first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss, reports ESPN’s Mark Saxon. Notably, Saxon adds that the lack of a QO “effectively [ends]” Moss’ tenure with the Cardinals, seemingly indicating that the team isn’t currently planning on making a run at re-signing him.

Not surprising. His total collapse in September really killed his earning potential. The team needs to upgrade their OF as is. They can probably make a lot better use of $17.2M than Moss.

The Cardinals will exercise their $12 million club option on left-hander Jaime Garcia, as reported by Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.

I'm kind of in the middle here. Guy can be excellent, or horrible. With his stuff should be a consistent 15+ game winner. Have always thought he is a bit of a head case. "Can never have too much pitching" as the old saying goes. Perhaps included in a trade once we see how the pitching shakes out in ST.... 8-)

Based on value alone this was a no brainer. He is easily worth 1/12. How he fits on the current team is another question. I'm hoping Mo is working on some sort of trade that includes him.

This, this, this. Some fans just don't get it. This pitching market is HORRIBLE. Jaimie Garcia may eventually be part of what brings the team a new center fielder.

Cardinals officially declined the options on Matt Holliday and Jordan Walden today.

I'd forgotten that Walden even had an option. We got 10 great innings out of him, and that was all she wrote.

I'm fine with them trading Wacha instead, but someone in the rotation has to go now and the most obvious answers are Garcia or Wacha. Wainwright and Leake both with no-trade powers. Martinez is Martinez. Lynn coming off of TJ and I imagine would be harder to move, even with Garcia and Wacha having their histories.
