The St. Louis Cardinals and pitcher Carlos Martinez have agreed to a record $51 million, five-year contract extension, a source told ESPN. Mo is such a liar. Whatever he says, basically expect the opposite.

"We don't expect anything imminent." Two days later they introduce Fowler, who agreed to the deal the night he said that.

"We're taking Martinez to arbitration." Just a couple weeks before signing him to a record extension.

I figured $50/4+1 for Martinez. Instead we get $51/5+2. I'll take it.

So what is going on with Wacha then? An extension doesn't really make sense. A trade? Really going to arb over 500k?

I was a little surprised by the Pee Wee Herman suit he wore to the press conference.

Mo did say today that his focus is now on Wacha and the arbitration hearing. Which I figure means he's about to be traded straight up for Mike Trout.

Wacha is really the player you take to the hearing. It's a slam dunk case, "He can't stay on the field." And it's not like you have to twist something to make it suit your case and potentially alienate a player. It's the cold, hard truth.

They should have taken Rosenthal too. "He can't consistently throw strikes and get people out." He was the worst reliever in baseball last year. But sure, let's give him a raise to $6.4 million and then haggle with Martinez. It never made/doesn't make sense to me. Further because you know Rosenthal is eying free agency. And he's not been worth investing in more often than not. Long-term it doesn't really matter whether he likes you.

Also fun though, Martinez is getting paid $4.5 million this year, higher than his submitted figure for arbitration. Way to take the hard stance, Mo.

He can lie, lie, lie & lie every time he opens his mouth if the result is solid FA signings & locking-up our most talented young players.

Great job Mo! In your case, being called a liar is a compliment! Bravo.
