With more than a week to go before the Cardinals begin official full-squad workouts, Carpenter has already spent 2½ weeks on site working at his once and future position.

The Cardinals notified their All-Star third baseman and second baseman this past November that they want him to be their everyday first baseman. It’s part of a retooling of the infield that includes committing to Kolten Wong at second base, relying on Jhonny Peralta at third base and trusting that more athletic ability on the right side of the infield will cure the faulty defensive play of last summer. Although familiar with the position — he started 35 games there in 2016 — Carpenter came early to spring to sharpen his senses for the position.

Gyorko joined Dexter Fowler, Stephen Piscotty, Randal Grichuk, Aledmys Diaz, Matt Carpenter, Matt Adams, Greg Garcia and Kolten Wong among the position players who worked out at Roger Dean Stadium four days before they were scheduled to participate in the first full-squad workout.

Diaz, Carpenter and Wong have been in Jupiter for a few weeks, but Piscotty, Gyorko and Garcia made their first appearances of this spring at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday. Fowler reported on Sunday.

Cardinals RHP Alex Reyes has MRI on right elbow after reporting discomfort. Results to be determined.

Womp-womp. It was fun while it lasted, Alex.

Jeff Passan ✔ @JeffPassan
There is significant concern inside the Cardinals' organization that Alex Reyes, their star pitching prospect, needs Tommy John surgery.

Reyes, ranked as the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball according to MLBPipeline.com, was set to pitch in next month's World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic.

Not exactly the headlines I wanted or expected to read this early into Spring Training. Good grief, can't catch a break it seems.

He was important, but not exactly a crucial part of 2017. The worst part is that it pushes back his first 200 IP season at least another year out.

Definitely a blow. But it now paves the way for Weaver to really establish himself as a member of the opening day rotation.

I think Martinez will continue to blossom, Waino can't be worse than he was last year. Same goes for Leake. Lynn will be a huge boost to the rotation and Weaver and Wacha can provide solid 5th and 6th starter support.

I think we will be fine.

The Cardinals confirm to Derrick Goold that Alex Reyes will undergo Tommy John surgery. Paletta to perform.

I generally agree with these. The only thing between Martinez and being the ace is repetition. Wainwright should be better another year away from the Achilles injury. Leake's peripherals were great last year, a little better defense and he would have had a career year. Lynn will be 18 months away from his TJ when the season starts, which should have him back at 100%. And we'll see what Wacha can do with Weaver likely waiting in the wings.
