Martinez strikes me as a very prideful guy that wants to be great. I think he recognizes the commitment the team has made towards him and he seems to understand the responsibility that comes with it.

I think he's going to be fantastic this year.

Emotional control (maturity) is another.

That's NOT a criticism. He's young. His occasional meltdowns have been primarily from emotions, not mechanics.

Lance experienced the same thing.

I expect to see him show more maturity moving forward. I think he gets it.

He plays with passion and has a lot of flair. Hopefully, he doesn't suppress any of that trying to fit into a mold of what he thinks a Cardinal player should be.

I want him to show emotion, as long as it's not detrimental to the games outcome and it's under control.

If Jordan Schaefer makes the club, do you think Matheny will know how to effectively use him?

That's a massive "if." I just don't see a way he makes it on his pitching merits. If Schafer makes it, his bat needs to earn his way, I think. And his history would indicate that's unlikely.

Yeah I agree. But there is always that guy. Every season there's a guy that makes the roster thatwasnt on anyone's radar.

But I don't think Schafer will be that guy.

There's some stuff further down in this article about who starts Opening Day, but it sure sounds to me like Matheny is trying to talk himself into Wainwright.

It's a long season and anything can happen. Why wouldn't you give yourself the best shot possible to win Game 1?

I'd go with Wainwright. He's earned the right. Martinez will have his day.... 8-)

I agree.

And I assume we both believe that would dictate CMart as Opening Day starter.

I get wanting Wainwright to take the mound due to his veteran presence and the fact he's earned it with all he's done for this club over the years.

That said, I think it should be CMart as well. He's definitely becoming the ace of this club.

If they do go Wainwright I'll understand though.

More than just the celebratory nature of Opening Day, and beyond the International Marquee Game being on Sunday Night Baseball, I want my rotation set with my best pitcher taking the mound the most times. Get CMart on the hill first, throughout the season.

Just the way Matheny said it, "It's not about one game, it's about the long haul." Last year with one game, he suggested he'd use Martinez in the Wild Card Game if the team got there. So I think it's safe to say that Martinez is "one game" and Wainwright is "long haul" in Matheny's head.

And if he wants to go with Wainwright, that's not so much a problem. As I was thinking about it last night because I'll probably write about it, he's still the leader of the staff, even though Martinez may be the ace. Much like in Carpenter's final years. Carp was still the leader of the staff. The pomp and circumstance and Clydesdales indicate it's more than just one game, like batting lead off, it's an opportunity to set the tone for the season. And I have no problem turning to the leader of the staff to do that.

As long as Martinez is pitching Game 2, anyway.

Matheny's problem will come trying to explain his reasoning other than just letting it be what it is.
