Cardinals Extend Molina Through 2020!

Postby chevyman58 » Sat Mar 25, 2017 7:00 pm

Yadier Molina returned to camp confident that he has many more years to give behind the plate and is ready to determine whether those will come as a St. Louis Cardinal. Molina put the Cardinals on the clock, stressing that he is open to entering free agency if he and the club cannot reach an agreement on a contract extension before the team's April 2 opener.

"We have one more week to talk about it and after that I'm going to concentrate on my game," Molina said. "Whatever they want to do, like I said, I'd love to stay here, but if they don't want to spend money, I understand that, too. This is a business. I'm going to try and concentrate on myself."

His current contract, which will pay him $14 million this season, does include a mutual option for 2018. It's unlikely, however, that Molina would exercise that on his end. Asked if he's intrigued by exploring his value on the free-agent market for the first time, Molina said, "Oh yeah."

"I would love to," he added. "I mean, I would love to stay, but at the same time, I'm not afraid to go to free agency. I've still got many years in the tank, believe me. I feel great. I feel like a 20-year-old kid. Believe me, I'm not afraid to go to free agency."

so, we don't want this guy? im starting to wonder at the rate there acting. I get it, 25 million AAV is not cheap but Yadi is worth it from the leadership aspect he brings every day to the pitching staff.

Mo said yesterday during the broadcast that he will be reaching out to Molina's representatives this week. We want Yadi & Yadi wants to stay. Should not be that difficult to come to an agreement.... 8-)

I'll be completely shocked if they don't get something done to sign Yadi for the remainder of his MLB time. The only thing I didn't like was Molina saying that if a deal doesn't get done this week, he'll test free agency. I mean there's still an entire season to be played. Then again, maybe I read that wrong?

I don't think I could see Yadi in another uniform, it'd be worse that Pujols. Also would love to see Yadi signed and Kelly brought up in a year or two to work along side him. The knowledge he could gain from Yadi's tutelage would be crazy. Could help to solidify catcher on this club for many years to come.

I don't think money is going to be an issue. The Cardinals would like to see Yadi remain a Cardinal for life, but they need to figure out how the transition is going to work and what Molina is willing to do to accomodate that. I don't think they have any intention of signing Molina to a three or four year extension with him having the personal goal of catching 1200 innings at age 38.

I think Yadi is more legacy focused than Pujols was. I think Yadi really wants to stay in St. Louis for his entire career because of what that means on top of all your accolades.

But Molina has been positioning himself for an exit. You can't tell me that Yadi wouldn't call his brother after the first comments he made about negotiations and say, "Shut your pie hole about my contract," if he didn't support what Bengie was putting out there. I think Yadi is expecting the team to move on and he's laid the groundwork to keep favor with the fans. Which is really where Pujols failed on his exit with his "Why would I take a few more million a year to play anywhere else?" before doing that exact thing.

I think the smart play is to keep Yadi at all costs. The guy has been a workhorse his entire career and the intangibles that he brings to the table can't be replicated by Kelly.

I think offering him a three year with a player/club option for a fourth year at $21M per would be more than fair and acceptable to all parties.

Throw in some incentives for starts, at bats, and awards that could earn him a little more scratch and you have a sweet deal.

But the worst move would be to come cheap, let him walk and watch Kelly struggle. You can't afford to do that.

You're right, the odds are that Kelly is not going to be the same caliber of catcher as Molina. And, I think, to a point if they thought he was they wouldn't even be engaging with Molina. Not to say Kelly won't be a really good catcher.

I say offer between $54M/3 and $60M/3, starting in 2018 (maybe rewrite this year and give him a raise to even out some of the cost over all four years) with the understanding that eventually they're going to start phasing Kelly in and he's going to have to sit more than he'd like.

Thought I read an article that there was a rumor that the Cards wanted 2 years, Yadi wanted 4, and they were expected to get something done for 3 years and between 45M and 55M.

If that was true, I'd be all in for it. I have a feeling it will be more than that though.

Given what I read today, I think in Goold's chat, I get the feel that we'll end up with something like $75M/4 with it starting this year and front loaded.

That's an $18.75M AAV. That would make Yadi the highest paid catcher in baseball by AAV and if you take Mauer's deal off the table since he hasn't caught in four years, the highest AAV for a catcher ever.

They can afford him.

The price of beer at Busch has gone up, again. This year, a 20-ounce cup of Budweiser — brewed 2 miles from the stadium — will cost $9.25.

People keep buying it at that price, they will keep upping the prices.

In the last hour, both sides have said that a deal is not done. But that could just be semantics until ink is on paper.

My first 2017 prediction up in smoke. "Yadi won't sign an extension before Opening Day, but they will get an extension done early in the year."
