Some folks just want a trade for the sake of having some action whether it makes sense or not. It always seems slow this time of year, but we all know there are discussions taking place. Gotta play the game and do something where both sides benefit.

Would love to have Donaldson with an extension. Otherwise I'm fine with Gyorko at 3B. I'd like us to make sure we have a lock down bullpen next. Agree our rotation is questionable at best. Give me Colome, or another proven closer.

Need a CLOSER

Not a "we'll figure out who it is in Spring Training" closer - BUT A LEGITIMATE C L O S E R.

I'd also think about signing Adam Lind as a LH bat off the bench and utility player.

His name is Wade Davis. 1.65 ERA, 0.98 WHIP as a reliever in his career. Probably the closest thing to Mariano Rivera in baseball today and coincidentally, he's a free agent.

If Carpenter is part of a deal for Donaldson he is a perfect fit.

Having or not having Carpenter as a Cardinal was not a reason for me to sign Lind or not. We have no LH bat (power bat) off the bench. Garcia, if re-signed, is our only LH bat on the bench.

Just a thought.

I'd trade Carpenter, Wisdom, and another minor leaguer for Donaldson. Then I'd trade Gyorko, Hudson, Kelly, Flaherty, and O'Neil or Bader to Tampa for Archer, Colome and B. Miller.

Do we really think Waino can be an effective starter this year? I'm extremely doubtful.

Of the 61 Major League starters with at least 300 innings pitched over the last 2 years Waino's 4.81 ERA ranks 59th. Seriously, 59th out of 61. Yikes.

I do. I had this discussion a couple weeks ago. I'm pretty optimistic on Wainwright.

I think we're still seeing his health curve catch up to his decline curve following the Achilles injury. I think he's still not completely over that injury and there's still some room to improvement before you reach what his typical decline would be.

I argue this because when you look at his ERA, it went up in 2017 but he pitched much better than in 2016. I'm going off memory here on this one, but I believe he had twice as many starts where he had a 4.00 ERA or lower for his results in 2017 than he did in 2016 and he made 10 fewer starts. I think there's the idea that just because Wainwright's final number was bad that he was bad every time out. Or at least, that's how people talk about his season.

So let's take a look at 2017. Let's take off his last three starts after he came back from the DL stint since he was trying to pitch through back/shoulder problems when he shouldn't have. That leaves him a 4.89 ERA over 20 starts. In those 20 starts, he had a pair of starts where he allowed 18 earned runs over 5.1 innings combined. Take those out and in those 18 starts he had a 3.60 ERA. 30% of the runs he allowed came in 10% of those starts.

So, if Wainwright can do that, post a 3.60 ERA in 90% of his starts, and take the ball 30 times, that'll be just fine.

Wins are a pretty meaningless stat, but I think we forget that the team won the most behind Wainwright versus the other starting pitchers. That does mean something and I think Wainwright will surprise this year. He'll have those games that will ruin his overall numbers, but I think more often than not he's going to get the job done.

I think he can, but I'm pretty doubtful as well. It is possible that his arm is still relatively fresh for his age. Think you have to give him a shot at the beginning of the year, but if it is clear that he doesn't have it after the first month, you gotta make a move.

As I recall, there were a number of games where Waino was the best hitter in the lineup. And produced accordingly.

if Im the GM I keep Waino on the roster in some capacity, player or mentor until he's tired of being here. hes been a good Cardinal, both on the field and in the city of St. Louis.

He's in his last contract year & recently stated he wants to retire a Cardinal. But he didn't indicate he was ready to retire.

I think we'll know what he has left in the tank by June, if not before Camp breaks.

Only 32 days til Pitchers & Catchers report.

Only 42 days til 1st ST Game vs the Marlins.

Wainwright has said that when this current contract is up that his plan is to take it year-to-year with one year deals. I would not be surprised, good or bad year, if this was the end for him.
