Hey, I know the type of usual "signings" this franchise has made in the recent past. Scrubs nobody else wanted

From the long posts that R27 and I made, you thought this was a 31 year old low hanging fruit scrub that no one else wanted? Wow man. Just clicking on a link that was posted would have told you otherwise. And pretty sure posts like that aren't made about Wigginton type signings. Seriously the negativity over literally everything is beyond old. I'm not happy about 2 years out of the playoffs but it shows how ridiculously spoiled we are that we can realistically have those type of expectations.

Can't wait. This has been one of the most boring baseball off seasons that I can remember.

Seems that way, doesn't it?

Yet, we acquired the best player in years & years, best since Holliday. Yet we all seem extremely underwhelmed.

I think it's because we keep expecting the other shoe to drop. It was hot and heavy leading up to Christmas, with massive trades involving Colome, Archer, Longoria and Machado being thrown around. We all assumed things would pick up after New Years and they haven't.

It might also be that nobody else is making moves. We're usually kept occupied for a few weeks in the winter by ripping the Cards for letting team X get player Y.

Agreed. By now in normal offseasons the team is almost always done or mostly done. As are most teams. But there are still so many big names available plus lots of trade rumors that there is still a lot of action to go this off-season.

It is possible that they are done (unlikely IMO). It is possible there is only 1 minor move still coming. Or they could go for something huge still. Lots of options still for the team.

Last year all 10 of ESPN's top-10 free agents were signed at this point. This year 8 of their top-10 remain unsigned. It's just been slow.

From what I understand the Cardinals have a lot of things on the table, just nobody's making any decisions.

And now a lot of teams have turned their attention to their arbitration cases.

Just a weird winter. We set a record for the longest stretch of time at or below freezing at the RDU airport.

Things will heat up as Spring Training approaches. I'll bet some players are getting a bit antsy. Eventually the agents will as well.

In a normal baseball off season, most of the marquee free agents have found new homes and most of the major trades that occur each winter have already been finalized. However, this winter in baseball is unlike any that we have seen before.

"For the first time I can recall, every team is being exceptionally prudent in the contract offers that they are making to free agents," a well-known player agent who has a handful of available free agents told me. "Usually, teams panic if they haven't landed a player that they want by Christmas but this time we are actually seeing teams let the market settle."

In speaking with multiple MLB front office executives, player agents and players themselves, they all talked about a common theme never before seen in baseball history: Teams are actually showing restraint instead of handing out long term, huge money contracts to players that weren't worthy of such massive commitments.

I expect all sense to be abandoned next winter. They'll make up for it.

I think it was indeed due to the speculation that was out there. The Cards were being mentioned all over the place, I thought surely after Christmas or at least New Year's things would get going. Nobody's doing anything though, it's crazy.

Rosenthal said on Hot Stove yesterday that something like 31 of the 165 free agents have been signed so far. That's an alarmingly slow pace. There was even talk of the Players Union having to set up a camp for the guys that go unsigned with there being so many. Curious to see how many are forced out by not being offered.

It's been weird too because so many deals that seemed so close never happened.

There were reports Logan Morrison got offers from the Angels and Cardinals in November and he's still unsigned. There were reports that the Cardinals and Addison Reed were closing in on a deal in November before it died. The Rays/Cardinals discussions for Colome seemed so close at the Winter Meetings as if they were simply waiting for the Ozuna deal to be done so the Rays could decide for sure who they were going to get. There were reports the Rockies were closing in on a deal with Greg Holland and a week later Wade Davis signs a giant deal with them.

It's really inexplicable.
