Even here... Gerrit Cole to the Astros today. Nearly a done deal 30 minutes ago. Now on hold.

Something I saw today that I hadn't noticed before... Sandy Alcantara slotted in as the Marlins' #1 prospect according to MLB.com after the Ozuna trade.

R27 wrote:It's been weird too because so many deals that seemed so close never happened. There were reports Logan Morrison got offers from the Angels and Cardinals in November and he's still unsigned. There were reports that the Cardinals and Addison Reed were closing in on a deal in November before it died. The Rays/Cardinals discussions for Colome seemed so close at the Winter Meetings as if they were simply waiting for the Ozuna deal to be done so the Rays could decide for sure who they were going to get. There were reports the Rockies were closing in on a deal with Greg Holland and a week later Wade Davis signs a giant deal with them.

It's really inexplicable.

Easily explained ................. the rapidly growing phenomenon of Fake News.

Here's something...

The Cardinals have settled on a 1 year, $2.6 million deal with OF Randal Grichuk to avoid arbitration.

Until earlier today I'd forgotten that arbitration exchanges were tomorrow. Just part of how weird this offseason has been.

And according to MLB Pipeline, Sierra is now the Marlins' No. 5 prospect and Gallen is No. 15.

Ozuna needs to be retained & needs to be Holliday II for us. We just upgraded Jeter's farm giving him his best prospect, 2 of his top 5 & 3 of his top 15. That's potentially a haul. Jeter needs it, he's quickly gone from a Beloved Player to a Despised Owner. Only thing saving him is his player reputation &, more impactfully, that Loria was perhaps the most despised owner in professional sports.

I'd forgotten that Grichuk was still on the team, if it makes you feel any better :)

I think Jeter is getting run through the mud for this only because he is a former player and everyone has a generally high opinion of him. I think if it's just Joe Businessman that there's not nearly the issues with what they're doing. Both the Astros and the Cubs did this when they got new owners, neither got the bad press that Jeter is getting, and a few years down the road it paid off.

IMO, Jeter needs to not be judged on what he's doing this winter. A new owner's first move when buying a struggling business is to stabilize the business. That's what they're doing in Miami. They want to implement their own business model to build a sustainable franchise and Loria's business model was not conducive to that. So they had to make some adjustments to better position themselves to run the Marlins how they want to. Now, if in five or six years they're tearing it all down again this same way, then I fully support crucifying him. But I don't have a problem with what they've done in Miami so far.

I believe it's the appearingly cold, impersonal, heartless way it's been reported he's done some things, not necessarily what it is he's done. Further, I think it fair there's a super-sensitivity there due to Loria's history - career history, not just in Florida. AND the apparent complicity of MLB in his actions as an owner over decades.

Take the new owner of the local bad-reputation/lousy restaurant, he hangs an 'Under New Management' sign out front & promises the locals a better experience. If you roll in & the floor's still sticky, the bathrooms still filthy & the booths still duct-taped he's gonna get ripped. I think that's the impression the customer's gonna have at least initially. Ricketts got drilled in Chicago for a few years too, but never that I recall for the way he treated staff, employees & Cubs fan-favorite icons.

Time will tell. But the Loria Legacy will take some extra effort to overcome. He's not off to a good start by fan perception.

The Cardinals have agreed to terms on one year deals with all three remaining arbitration eligible players. Salaries still to be reported.

$9M for Ozuna (projected at $10.9M)
$5.3M for Wacha (projected at $5.9M)
$1.2M for Lyons (projected at $1.3M)

Ozuna's is a huge deal. Khris Davis settled at $10.5M yesterday and that was about what many expected Ozuna to settle around. Considering that Ozuna has played just 30 more games than Davis and has been worth 4 more WAR over their careers.

So, if Ozuna rakes like last year, he's gonna be maybe a $14M+ Arb guy next year & $19M+ Arb guy in 2019 right?

Not cheap. The days of riding great young performers for a long time on the cheap are gone.

One can see why they roll the dice early on long-term deals with the Craigs, Carps, Piscottys, CMarts of the world. If they hit gold on a reasonable % of these guys they can eat the flameouts & still be millions ahead.

Imagine if some young guy puts up Pujols in his prime numbers, the amount he'd get now if teams are paying somebody 11 million for ONE GOOD YEAR

Just remember that Pujols got a record pre-Arb 3rd year contract then got a record Arb-buyout contract and a record STL contract. It was a fantastic deal for Pujols, It then turned into a fantastic deal for the Cards too because he went Ruthian. He coulda blown out a knee early & been done.
