WTH? Unless Woodman is part of the Stanton trade there is not much at all to like about this. 22 year old corner OF who didn't hit well and struck out 38% of the time in class A...

This doesn't make sense to me at all. Why trade Diaz for a guy that struggled in Class A? Not only that but another OFer. We've got a plethora of OFers as it is. What's Mo doing?

Diaz was going to be released. That's the only answer here. He was in a weird spot. Not eligible for salary arbitration, but didn't have a contract. After being paid $2.5 million last year, would have had to make a minimum of $2 million this year. That's a lot for a guy who is effectively behind Jedd Gyorko, Greg Garcia, and Matt Carpenter at third base and then Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong up the middle. And has proven to be a disaster defensively, even when he does hit.

It's a lottery ticket trade. Woodman was a second round pick 18 months ago. Said to be a plus defensive center fielder. Jays have played in pretty split in CF and RF so far. The arm is said to be really good. Was very good in his first pro season, hitting .297/.391/.445 over 63 games. Struggled on promotion, It's a bet on a college hitter, who generally have the best odds at panning out too.

That said, I do get the "why another outfielder" complaint. But Woodman would be 2-3 years away at best while the batch of guys we have are less than one year away.

Marlins have essentially accepted the offers of both the Cardinals and the Giants. It is now in Stanton’s hands as to where he wants to go.

They went all in. Taking on the most money and offered the best package. Stanton goes to San Fran I hope they lose the next 3 years and he enjoys paying the extra 7% taxes in Cali. Couldn't be happier with the Cards and I nothing to complain about.

According to Craig Mish of SiriusXM, a Giancarlo Stanton trade is expected to be finalized within the next two to three days. The Giants and St. Louis Cardinals are known to be the two clear frontrunners, with the Dodgers in the mix as the team Stanton apparently prefers, but may not get a chance to join.

Per Craig Mish as well, who has been killing it on the reporting of this, the Cardinals offered the better package of prospects (also reported that Alcantara is the best prospect in the offer) AND offered to take on more of Stanton's contract than the Giants. So the Cardinals did everything they needed to do to be the best offer on the table.

On the Dodgers, they aren't a serious contender for a couple reasons.

First, Stanton would cost them $25 million in salary and another $12.5 million in luxury tax next year. They've paid over $60 million in luxury tax the past two seasons and only lost a couple small one year deals in free agency, so with the addition of Stanton it could very easily be a $40+ million luxury tax bill for 2018.

Second, starting this year if you're more than $40 million over the luxury tax threshold, which LA most certainly would be since based on 2017's tax bill they were more than $60 million over, your first round pick gets penalized 10 spots in the draft.

So for the Dodgers and Marlins to make this happen, the Dodgers would have to take all of Stanton's salary, send the Marlins MLB players and money to cover those contracts, and prospects. If either side was up for this, they'd be much further along this discussion than they are.

Seems like we've done as much as we can. Would like to know the details. What players are involved & amount of contract that would be assumed, if opt out time frame has changed, etc.

From what I've read it may come down to where Stanton wants to play. We'll see.

From what I've seen, I'm impressed with what the Cards put out there. It seems they legitimately went for it on Stanton. If Stanton chooses to go to SF (which I think happens) it won't be the front offices fault.

I do wish this would play out rather quickly though so that we can move on if need be. That said, I'm sure they're not putting all of their eggs in Stanton's basket. At least I hope not.

I think there's still a good chance Stanton turns down both and stays in Miami. For over a month I've been saying he'd be dealt by November 20th or not at all. And here we are December 4th. I think Stanton wants LA or he wants to win. No clear winners on the table. So does he take the team with the most clear path to winning or closest to where he wants to be or stay where he is and maybe LA is more interested next year after $100M comes off the books?

Just had an update come across my phone that the Marlins have interest in Michael Wacha and Jose Martinez in the Stanton trade talks. Kind of weird that this is just now coming out when it has been reported that Alcantera is the centerpiece of the agreed to deal. I can't see Wacha being included if Alcantera is the centerpiece. Maybe they were talked about? Maybe they were also talked about in a deal for Yelich? Not saying I'm against it, just seems strange to see this now lol.

And if it really is Wacha and Alcantera, they better have some pitching ready to sign because the rotation is going to be thin, especially starting the year out.

CBS seems to think it's some combo of Wacha, Martinez, Alacantra and change. They also seem to think that's a steal for Stanton. Too much off the big roster for my taste, but to each their own.

They talked about a Wacha/Ozuna swap last winter, so it's not the first time that the Cardinals and Marlins would have talked about Wacha.

On the Marlins end, it kinda makes some sense because if the Marlins plan to trade off a bunch of players this winter, they'll need cost controlled MLB ready players to fill those roster spots. I'm much more keen to move Wacha than Martinez because I do think Martinez could be a good enough hitter to be on the plus side at first base. And I've said before that Wacha's trade value might never be higher than it is right now.
