WTH? Unless Woodman is part of the Stanton trade there is not much at all to like about this. 22 year old corner OF who didn't hit well and struck out 38% of the time in class A...
Diaz was going to be released. That's the only answer here. He was in a weird spot. Not eligible for salary arbitration, but didn't have a contract. After being paid $2.5 million last year, would have had to make a minimum of $2 million this year. That's a lot for a guy who is effectively behind Jedd Gyorko, Greg Garcia, and Matt Carpenter at third base and then Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong up the middle. And has proven to be a disaster defensively, even when he does hit.
It's a lottery ticket trade. Woodman was a second round pick 18 months ago. Said to be a plus defensive center fielder. Jays have played in pretty split in CF and RF so far. The arm is said to be really good. Was very good in his first pro season, hitting .297/.391/.445 over 63 games. Struggled on promotion, It's a bet on a college hitter, who generally have the best odds at panning out too.
That said, I do get the "why another outfielder" complaint. But Woodman would be 2-3 years away at best while the batch of guys we have are less than one year away.
