Per Jeff Passan and Jon Heyman, Cardinals are nearing a 2 year, $15.5 million deal with RHP Miles Mikolas. Mikolas, 29, spent the last three seasons pitching in Japan where he went 31-13 with a 2.18 ERA over 62 starts and 425 innings. He last pitched in the big leagues with Texas in 2014, posting a 6.44 ERA over 10 starts.

Interesting move that will likely be widely panned by the fan base. I like it though. They're obviously hoping for a Colby Lewis/Ryan Vogelsong situation.

Also might signal that the Cards are serious about dealing Wacha.

Saw a video of him pitching in Japan and his curve looks pretty nasty. Kind of similar looking to Waino's. Seems like a decent low risk signing with good potential upside.

Also he is known as the Lizard King. Because of the video here.

I saw that there's at least once projection system saying that he projects to be better over the next three years than Arrieta. So I'm cool with that.

Also, his last MLB pitching coach was none other than Mike Maddux. So potentially, Maddux had something to do with it.

Also, after bringing in Mike Maddux and Miles Mikolas, look for the club to bring in Mike Moustakas to complete the "MM" set.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say man. If your question is who went to Asia and then came back and had success, guys like Ryan Vogelsong and Colby Lewis come to mind.
If you're asking about pitchers? Darvish and Tanaka have had well above average careers. Iwakuma, Dice-K and Chien-Ming Wang have also had sustained success.
If you're asking about hitters, the list is even longer.

Not every signing can be of the breaking news, video-game caliber variety. It was a savvy move, which are the kind of manuevrs that separate the consistently bad teams from the consistently competitive ones.

I wasn't asking this EOCF. I was responding to CF4L's statement.

Sorry Tully. I was responding to cf4l, but it only snagged your quote for some reason.

Mish with some more breaks on Stanton... Houston was involved early, but was unable to find something that worked for both sides... Giants offer is Beede, Ramos, Shaw, and Arroyo (their top-4 prospects) and taking on 85% of Stanton's contract.

Wow and the Cards topped it apparently? That is pretty impressive.

I bet the Cards have all the "eaten money" after the opt out.

There's some suggestion out there that Stanton had asked the Giants and the Cardinals about moving the opt-out to after 2019 instead of after 2020 (gets him out of the same free agent class as Trout) and moving some money from before the opt-out to after, the suggestion I heard was dropping the pre-opt out to essentially $40M/2 instead of $77M/3 and turns the opt out into $255M/8 versus $218/7. But nothing as far as whether the teams were okay with that. But I can't imagine they wouldn't be. Sets him up to be able to leave sooner if he doesn't like it.
