Nicasio wants to stay in St. Louis

"I'm definitely open to it and would actually like that, because once you start free agency, there are so many different teams and options coming at you," Nicasio said when asked about the possibility of beginning extension talks in October. "It could give me a clear head to be able to get that done before. But, unfortunately, I don't control that. The front office, the coaches and my agent do. But I would definitely be interested."

Interesting article, gotta wonder if Carp has played his way out of STL.

Martinez has inside track at first base with Cardinals http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball ... 500c2.html

Wainwright to undergo elbow surgery Tuesday

ST. LOUIS -- Compromised by a bone bruise in his right elbow for the final two months of the season, Adam Wainwright will undergo an elbow arthroscopy procedure on Tuesday to have a piece of cartilage shaved down. It's the same procedure Wainwright had following the 2014 season.

The medical staff has advised Wainwright that he'll need six weeks of recovering before beginning the rehab process. He expects to be fully healthy by the time Spring Training starts in February and should be able to engage in a normal offseason throwing program.

That's 1. I have the over/under on offseason surgeries for 2017 Cardinals at 2.5.

According to reports on Twitter Derek Lilliquist is out as pitching coach. Blaise Ilsley didn’t have his contract renewed. The rest of the staff will be returning.

It’ll be interesting to know the story behind this move. Because I believe there’s a lot more to it.

Mozeliak said that they want to rethink the strategy of pitching use and have a pitching coach that is open to the data available and some modern views of how pitchers should be deployed.

Facepalm......

Pretty sure the manager is the one that deploys pitchers....

Lilly wasn't the issue in 2017. I'm not a fan of bringing in another 'yes man' for Matheny. I've defended Mike on here for a long time, but I'm ready for a new voice.

IF they're keeping him though, they need to bring in a new bench coach. It has nothing to do with Bell, but Mike desperately needs a curmudgeonly, old, baseball lifer who has the status and authority to tell Mike to get his head out of his butt.

And Mabry stays. L.O.L.

This feels just like when Derrick May was let go as assistant hitting coach after doing such a good job preparing pinch hitters that we set records.

Maybe there's more to it than we know, but on the surface, this is funny.

Unfortunately, Mozeliak told me when Aldrete left that Matheny has a say in his coaching staff. One can argue that if you want to hang him, you let him hang himself.

You would assume that It's playoffs or bust for the coaching staff next year. My late 90s memory is a little fuzzy, but I don't believe St. Louis has missed the playoffs 3 straight years at any point in the DeWitt era.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Lilliquist was the last holdover from La Russa's coaching staff. Everyone else has been a Matheny decision. So now it will all be on Matheny. No excuses. How do you get someone to hang themselves? Give them some rope.

I'm willing to consider Lilliquist's role in bullpen management. Since they have both been together since the beginning and bullpen management has not improved. So the result is either 1) Matheny followed Lilliquist's advice on how to manage the bullpen, 2) Lilliquist agreed with the way Matheny managed to bullpen, or 3) Matheny wasn't listening to Lilliquist's advice on how to manage the bullpen. If Matheny's sticking around, all three are reasons to find a new pitching coach. In the hopes that you find someone who is better at managing the bullpen and/or that Matheny might listen to.

David Bell has taken a job as the Giants' Farm Director. Cards will need a new bench coach this winter too.

I'd still love to see Mike get an old curmudgeon for a bench coach. Mike desperately needs a baseball lifer with the authority to tell him to pull his head out of his butt.

Knowing how previous hires have gone though, I fully expect Gary Bennett, Preston Wilson, or another good-but-not-great former player from the 00's to be brought aboard.

Has Maloney been given a new job yet?

Though, Rob Rains seems to think Shildt would be the leading candidate.

The #Cubs have fired respected pitching coach Chris Bosio, and now could reach out to Jim Hickey, who's a top candidate for #STLCards opening

Unfortunately, I think this puts Hickey in Chicago, reunited with Maddon.
