His mother, Gretchen, was diagnosed in May with ALS, a debilitating ailment also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Fewer than 30 miles now separates her from Piscotty's place of work.

"I think it will be easy and convenient and frequent for her to be able to come out and watch me play," Piscotty said. "That'll give me a lot of comfort knowing that I'm close, so hopefully that takes a little pressure off me and I can relax and play and have fun."

"I thought if I were to get traded, this is the absolute best option for me and my family, so it's a dream come true in the sense that I get to play for my hometown team and not a lot of people get that chance, so I'm very grateful."

In need of a backup first baseman and some pop off the bench, the Washington Nationals signed Matt Adams to a one-year contract worth $4 million guaranteed, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Adams can earn up to another $500,000 in incentives.

Cards never should have let him go. Career .315 pinch hitter and hit .295/.342/.554 with 17 HR in 304 PA off of RHP.

But nah, he can't hit lefties the 25% of the time he might face one. So the best idea was to bury him behind another left handed hitting player. Martinez/Adams would be a great 1B platoon situation.

The same people I see talking about needing to find a LH power bat for the team this season are the same people who wanted to ship Adams out at all costs. Pretty much all LH hitters struggle against LH pitchers. It's the way of it. But that shouldn't negate the fact that they're very valuable in the 75% of MLB ABs which are taken against RHPs.

They got more for him than Atlanta did.

Agree he is useful as a bench bat. Just didn't really fit on the roster when they decided to play Carp at 1B full time. I get why they moved him. If Carp was part of a trade for Donaldson then Adams would REALLY be a great fit.
