2017 MLB News & Tidbits Thread

Postby chevyman58 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 7:59 pm

End of a Love Story - Reds pay fan favorite Mr. Lunchables $13M to hit the road.

Brandon Phillips opted not to reject a trade that brings him to his hometown of Atlanta in exchange for two pitchers -- Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo. The Reds will pay all but $1 million of the $14 million salary owed to Phillips as he enters the final year of his contract.

Phillips batted .291 with 11 homers and a .736 OPS last year. The four-time Gold Glove Award winner and three-time All-Star finished the season strong, hitting .344 with an .844 OPS over his final 63 games.

Seems the Braves got a steal there with that deal. I guess the Reds really wanted Phillips out of there.

Votto would probably be gone too except for his contract. Fire sale continues.... 8-)

Are those 2 pitchers good enough to pay Phillips $13M not to play? Seems a bit strange.

Yeah. McKirahan was a good reliever, but had TJ early last season. It's not a stretch to think he could turn into a solid lefty reliever.

They get to put Peraza (#66 prospect before last season) in everyday at second base. He hit .324 in 72 games last year after being called up. Played a bunch of different positions, but they've penciled him in at second.

Baseball players of all positions will be reporting for spring training this week, but one guy won’t be among them. Jung Ho Kang, infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, will be going on trial in South Korea on February 22 for charges stemming from his December DUI arrest. That’s five days after the Pirates’ first full-team workout, and so Kang won’t only be late, but no one has any idea when he will be able to report.

This trial originates from his December 2 arrest in South Korea for driving under the influence. While operating the vehicle, Kang got into an accident and then fled the scene. The police caught up to him soon after, and once they discovered that his blood alcohol level was .084, over the legal limit of .05, he was arrested.

That was Kang’s third DUI arrest in his home country of South Korea, which means his license will be (or has already been) revoked. He has also been cut from South Korea’s World Baseball Classic roster due to his arrest. There’s been no formal punishment issued by MLB or the Pirates yet, but Kang has agreed to enter an alcohol treatment program.

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton’s comeback attempt has been put on hold once again. Hamilton underwent surgery to repair meniscus cartilage in his left knee. The injury is expected to keep him out at least six weeks. Hamilton was limited to just one game in the minors last season due to surgery on the same knee. He’s played in just 139 games in the majors since 2014.

The Angels will be paying Hamilton another $26.410 MILLION dollars this year, the final year of his 5-year, $125M deal. The Rangers pay him league minimum if he makes the big league roster.

And then there's this money going out for the next 4 years:

Prince Fielder 1b, 9 years/$214M (2012-2020)
12-13:$23M annually. 14-20:$24M annually
acquired by Texas in trade from Detroit 11/20/13, with Tigers paying $30M to Rangers in the deal (paid in 2016-20)
Fielder will remain on disabled list after 8/16 neck surgery. Insurance policy will cover $9M annually of Fielder’s remaining annual salaries, with Texas responsible for $9M each year and Detroit responsible for $6M each year through 2020

Adrian Beltre has made history. The Rangers third baseman doubled off Orioles left-handed starter Wade Miley in the fourth inning on Sunday to collect his 3,000th career hit, becoming the first Dominican-born player in Major League history -- and the 31st player overall -- to achieve the feat.

Beltre also became just the third player to reach 3,000 hits as primarily a third baseman, joining Hall of Famers George Brett and Wade Boggs.
