World Baseball Classic 2017

Postby chevyman58 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 7:12 am

Team Israel right-hander Jason Marquis, who started the country's first World Baseball Classic game on Monday against Pool A host nation Korea, pitched three scoreless innings before being lifted for reliever Zack Thornton with Israel leading, 1-0.

Israel manager Jerry Weinstein removed Marquis from the game after the 38-year-old former Major Leaguer had thrown 45 pitches (28 strikes).

Carlos Martinez, playing in his first WBC, limited Canada to just three hits and one run -- which was scored on a balk call in the third -- over four innings, striking out three batters without a walk. The 25-year-old eclipsed 50 pitches, totaling 53, meaning he won't be eligible to pitch again for the Dominican Republic until Tuesday, should the country advance to the second round.
"I'm grateful to the managers that allowed me to have this first game," Martinez said. "I had good focus, and I said, 'This is my game.' I wasn't nervous or anything. I simply worked as I always do."

CMart looked dang good last night. Had his stuff working from the start. That balk was a bit of a joke too, I was curious to see how he'd react and he even smiled about it, patted himself on the chest to admit his mistake, and moved on. Hoping that composure carries over this season. Definitely impressed after last night.

Team USA just underway vs Columbia.

No Carp. I guess he decided not to play after all?

I don't think I see any Cards on roster, closet thing appears to be Neshek.

Is that right?

Carp sat out due to his back soreness.

Brett Cecil is there I believe.

Cecil is on the USA roster. But with the way pitcher pools work, I'm not sure if/when he is actually available.

Carpenter had to step out because of his injury, otherwise USA would have had to play short until he was ready to return. Once taken off the roster for an injury you can't come back, I believe. I might be wrong, but it is related to roster rules for the WBC in regards to the handling of his injury.

Next question:

Great play by Canada the other night to throw Baustista out at the plate but it looked to me in the WBC you can still block the plate. Is that right?

Yadi single-handedly beats the mighty Dominican Republic squad of All-Stars. It was amazing to watch the Master at work. Wow!

He had a great game indeed. The Baez kid is pretty special. Sure would like to see him as a Cardinal someday.... 8-)

Man, Yadi really looks like he wants this. I wish the USA guys would get up for the WBC like it seems many of the international players have.

That throw he threw to Baez and Baez's tag in the 8th was an absolute thing of beauty! Baez didn't even see the ball into his glove or the tag, he was too busy congratulating Yadi on the throw. That was insane.
