FYI:

There were no 19 game winners in all of MLB last season.

There were only 2 in each League the season prior (neither Bumgarner nor Kershaw).

Your Ace Bumgarner has never won 19 games in a season, ever.

I hope Max Scherzer, who's won the last 2 NL Cy-Youngs, doesn't have hurt feelings that our resident Ace Expert has determined him unworthy.

Martinez won 12 games last year. Where are you getting 9 from?

Wins are a terrible way to evaluate how a pitcher did, but do you know how many Cole won last year? 12. You know how many he won the year before that? 7.

Last 3 seasons (since Martinez became a starter):
Martinez:
14-7, 3.01 ERA, 1.286 WHIP, 9.2 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 130 ERA+ (30% better than league average pitcher)
16-9, 3.04 ERA, 1.224 WHIP, 8.0 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 133 ERA+
12-11, 3.64 ERA, 1.220 WHIP, 9.5 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 117 ERA+

Cole:
19-8, 2.60 ERA, 1.091 WHIP, 8.7 K/9, 1.9 BB/9, 149 ERA+
7-10, 3.88 ERA, 1.440 WHIP, 7.6 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 107 ERA+
12-12, 4.26 ERA, 1.251 WHIP, 8.7 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, 101 ERA+

Cole was a stud in 2015 but that looks way more like the outlier than anything as he has gotten worse in each of the last 2 years. Only 32 pitchers qualified for the ERA title last year, and Cole ranked 21st. Martinez was 12th BTW.

I get that you are Debbie Downer about the Cards so you are going to remember the negative for them and the positive for players on other teams, but just look at the numbers man. Martinez is hands down better in the past 2 years and it really isn't close. And Cole isn't anywhere close to an ace...

The grass is always greener on the other side. The two guys I always go back to are Jon Jay and Matt Adams. To hear most fans tell it, these guys were junk, but after they were traded away we're looking for exactly what they were. Traded Jay and a year later brought in a center fielder who could lead off. Traded Adams and a year later talking about how the team needs a left handed power bat.

But on Martinez. To qualify for an ERA title, you need 162 innings. He's been in the rotation three years, so 486 innings. Of the starting pitchers in the last three years to throw 486 innings since Martinez joined the Cardinals' rotation full time in 2015, Martinez has been the 13th best starter with the 11th most innings and the 10th most wins and was the youngest of the 45 pitchers who have.

And he completely destroys the next five youngest in ERA+, IP, and wins.

In addition to JJay & Matt Adams - add Lance Lynn to the list.

JJay took more unwarranted crap from The Best Fans In Baseball than anyone since Chris Duncan, as did those of us in his fan club.

Alex Rodriguez will replace Aaron Boone in ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball booth this season. A-Rod will also continue his studio work for Fox.

There are roughly three weeks until pitchers and catchers report and nine of the top 10 free agents are still available.

Christian Yelich to the Brewers sounds like it's happening. So shots fired.

Marlins bring back OF Lewis Brinson (consensus top-30 prospect), SS Isan Diaz (consensus top-100 prospect), OF Monte Harrison (2nd round pick in '14), and RHP Jordan Yamamoto (2.51 ERA in 111 innings in High A in '17).

And it seems like it might have been holding up Grichuk to the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays reportedly were close earlier this week. Marlins wanted Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Blue Jays said no. Blue Jays acquired Grichuk. Brewers will get Yelich.

Now the Brewers agree to terms with OF Lorenzo Cain. Busy day in Milwaukee.

Brinson and Harrison are now the Marlins' top-2 prospects ahead of Alcantara. Five of their top-7 were acquired in the deals for Yelich, Ozuna, and Stanton.

Brewers are starting to build a solid lineup. I believe they are missing the pitching they need but they are close. Yu Darvish heading there rotation would make them scary.

Pitching staff is a recurring issue among the three top NLC clubs. IMO the Cubs have the highest floor, but the Cardinals have the highest ceiling. I guess we'll see how this goes.

Manny Machado made it clear this offseason he wants to play shortstop, his natural position, and manager Buck Showalter confirmed at Orioles FanFest on Saturday that the club is granting his request. Tim Beckham, who was acquired in a July 31 deal with the Rays last season, will slide over to 3B.

So, Tony Carter, the leader of the MLBPA says that clubs are basically in a race to the bottom and that's apparently the reason for all of these unsigned free agents. To me, the MLBPA is clearly in the wrong here, if there is a right and wrong. These players have offers out there, they're the ones holding out for monster contracts.

What's wrong with clubs not wanting to hand out long term deals that go well into a players declining years? Can you blame them for not wanting to spend that much on declining production? I really hope this doesn't get back to the strike mess that happened before. I saw it had been put online about boycotting spring training, which has been determined to be false. Just really hope it doesn't it get to that.

That’s really the thing. None of the guys in free agency, maybe except JD Martinez are sure contributors. Eric Hosmer has seven years, but hasn’t signed because he wants 8. Greg Holland turned down $56M/3 because he wanted four years. Yu Darvish has a $100 million offer, but wants more years. Same with Arrieta.

But it’s the owners fault? Not buying it.

I’d say the mid-tier free agents are being held up by the top-tier, but really there are no great free agents that teams should be tripping over themselves to sign. Martinez is coming off a year where he hit twice as many home runs as he did the year before, but in one less game. Hosmer has never posted back-to-back positive WAR years. There are massive red flags with Darvish and Arrieta and Holland.

The agents have set some high expectations for their clients and teams aren’t willing to go big dollars and massive years for players who have either had year-to-year decline or haven’t shown any consistency. There’s nobody out there, except Martinez who I think undoubtedly makes the team that signs him better. And the main contending teams have their corner outfield spots lined up.
