Quintana’s Contract is very favorable to the Cubs. Quintana is owed around $3.2 million the rest of this season, $8.85 million next season and $10.5 million for each of the two after that, should the Cubs pick up the options for those years. The Arizona Diamondbacks pay Zack Greinke more for a single season than the Cubs will for 3½ of Quintana.

I really liked Quintana. As a trade piece he was more attractive to me than Sale. Had pitched better in '15 and '16, same age, signed for longer and for cheaper.

He's outplaying every Cubs starting outfielder and has only the 11th most playing time on the team.

The Cubs acquired left-handed reliever Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila from the Tigers in exchange for top prospect infielder Jeimer Candelario, Class A shortstop Isaac Paredes and a player to be named or cash. The clubs have not confirmed the report. MLB.com's Jason Beck reported the Tigers would announce the deal Monday morning.

Jon Lester had to exit in the second with tightness in his left lat. The left-hander needed six pitches to retire the side in the first but served up eight runs on seven hits in the second. He threw 40 pitches to 11 batters over two-thirds of an inning. Lester was examined late Thursday by the Cubs orthopedic specialist, and an update was expected on Friday.

Kris Bryant hit his 25th HR of the year and lead the Cubs to their fourth straight win, a 6-2 victory over the Braves. The reigning MVP is the first player in franchise history and the 12th in the Majors to hit 25 or more home runs in each of his first three seasons.

Affter the Cubs’ dream of winning back-to-back World Series was blown up last week, Baseball Moses Theo Epstein said manager Joe Maddon could bring back every coach he wanted.

By Thursday, almost all of Maddon’s coaches were fired or gone somehow.

Maddon said it was a group decision involving Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer. Someone was lying.

Tracing back during the playoffs, Maddon said he wanted all his coaches back.

But again, almost all of his coaches have been fired or are gone somehow.

Maddon was lying.

But Thursday, Epstein suddenly indicated every change was a group decision.

So, Epstein was lying now or then, who knows, that’s how it’s going at the corner of Clark and Addison.

Lying is bad form.

I love how quickly the Cubs front office went from heroes to villains.

And it wasn't necessarily lying. It's very possible to create a scenario where Epstein was willing to allow Maddon to keep his staff, but where Maddon felt it wasn't a worthwhile use of his political capital to fight to keep them. At which point, what coaches to replace would become a group decision.

But if it wasn't lying, it certainly shows a dysfunctional front office/manager relationship. But that's par for the course in today's game right now. The manager is the middle man between the front office and the players and have fires to put out on both sides. The number of managers who have the muscle to force front office decisions is shrinking every day and I struggle to think of one in the game right now. Maybe Bochy. He might be the only one. But even then, Sabean has three rings too.
