Game 92: Cardinals @ Mets, 7/17/17, 6:10 pm

Postby chevyman58 » Mon Jul 17, 2017 8:37 am

............................................................................................................................................................................

Waino, 10-5, 5.20 vs Zack Wheeler, RH, 3-6, 4.86

Waino & his ugly 5+ ERA goes for his 11th Win on his quest for 20. He's got an 8.36 Road ERA this year ( :o  ).

Wheeler has struggled this year still trying to regain his form 2 years after Tommy John - but still has a better ERA than Waino. He just held the Cards to 2 runs over 6 innings in St. Louis 9 days ago.

Sierra made history yesterday as the first Cardinal ever to collect hits in each of his first 9 MLB games.

Running out of season, Cubs have come out swinging. Better get it together, falling out of contention. Got 4 games here including a breakfast game on Thursday then we roll into the Unfriendly Confines of Wrigley for a Friday afternoon series opener.

Milwaukee 52 - 42 .553 -
Chi Cubs 46 - 45 .505 4.5
St. Louis 44 - 47 .484 6.5
Pittsburgh 44 - 48 .478 7.0
Cincinnati 39 - 52 .429 11.5

Looks like Wong is missing something, causing him to sound more like a part of Uranus.

It's a miracle! The Cards win. Siegrist strikes out the side in the 8th. DeJong and Pham hit home runs. Sierra goes hitless to end his streak. Wainwright picks up win #11.

MM again used Cecil to close out the game. Again he was shaky. If not for Wong handling DeJong's low throw at 2B and turning the DP we would have been in a precarious position. Rosenthal wasn't available as he had pitched 3 days in a row. I just don't understand why he won't give Tuivailala or even Brebbia a chance to close when needed. Cecil is not the answer.

Thanks to Cespedes for swinging at ball 4 on a 3-0 count to create the dbl-play instead of loading the bases. Whew ............. muchos gracias.

Both Tui and Brebbia have closing experience too. Tui through the minors and Brebbia was closing in the Independent Leagues when he joined the big league club. It's not like these are guys who have started or been middle relief their entire careers. They are familiar, on a somewhat smaller scale, with the pressures of closing out a game.

"In fact, Tuivailala, John Brebbia, and Matthew Bowman have combined to allow just a single earned run over the last 28 days. No other reliever on the roster has less than two. They’ve earned a right to get an opportunity in higher leverage situations, especially when the guys who are there aren’t getting the job done." - Five Things About the Pirates Series

That game last night really had me nervous. To be honest, I'm a little surprised they held on. Between Sierra's two errors on one play and then Fowler absolutely dropping a fly ball that turned into a double, and the trouble that Cecil had, it's a miracle they held on for that one.

Really would like to see them shore some things up. The errors have gotten somewhat better but still too many too often for my liking. A closer would really be nice. Definitely don't think Cecil or Rosie are the answer. Tend to agree with y'all that giving either Tui or Brebbia a shot can't be any worse than what we're running out there right now.
