Game 138: Cardinals @ Pirates, 9/7/16, 6:05 pm CT

Postby chevyman58 » Wed Sep 07, 2016 5:17 pm

Mike Leake, 9-9, 4.56 vs Jameson Taillon, RF, 3-4, 3.25

Mets beat the Reds this afternoon, they're a 1/2 game back of the Cards in WC race.

After devastating loss last night Pirates have lost 8 straight & are now 5-1/2 back of Cards.

Leake had a great outing last start but has been out with Shingles ever since.

Over his last 10 starts, Taillon has covered 61 innings with a 2.80 ERA.

Hoping Molina stays hot, he's been on an absolute tear.

Jung Ho Kang makes Mozeliak pay for coming in second once again. Hits the game winning home run. Pirates win 4-3.

Plenty of chances, poor situational hitting up 'n down our lineups continue to plague our ability to win.

I will not go on yet another ugly rant about the year-after-year pathetic inability of our pitching staff to bunt at even the High School level.

End our every game HR streak.

The Amazing Mets continue their hottest-team-in-baseball streak, it's a dead-heat race now folks.

Even though we know Leake just returned to the rotation he has not been that effective IMO. It remains to be seen if he remains in the rotation or heads to the pen with his replacement to be named. Sure would be good if he could steady himself and keep Reyes as a weapon out of the pen. Probably went too long with Reyes last night.... 8-)

What we've seen lately with Luke Skyweaver, Reyes & yet again with Tui is when they miss Yadi's called location they get killed. Reyes was fantastic last night then missed one location. Yadi called that pitch low & away & he missed it & got it up & over. Even though it was 98 King Kong hammered it for a lead HR. At this level ya miss location in the middle of the plate & you'll get killed.

There's no pitcher on this team that's been impacted more by the shoddy defense than Leake.

He has the lowest BB/9 in the league, and the lowest of his career by far. Second best K/9 of his career. Almost the best HR/9 of his career. Line drive rate as good as ever. Ground ball rate best of his career by far. I read you all of that and you probably think I'm talking about a guy having the best season of his career. And by the fielding independent metrics, he arguably is.

But he's got the worst H/9 of his career. The balls being hit into play aren't being stopped. And really the only difference between quality mid-3 ERA Leake and what we've gotten this season is literally about one play not made on defense a game.

I should check Leake's ERA by shortstop. I remember Westbrook's being quite telling when we had Theriot playing a bulk of shortstop.

As again last night, Leake's having some balls misplayed so badly in the OF they can't be documented as E's. Add in the games I saw him pitch with Jhonny @ SS and the balls that got thru that Peralta never came close to I can see it with my own eyes.

Now, Wong did get him a dbl-play last night that few could ever turn but still, Leake's been horribly victimized by his defense all year.

Leake's ERA by starting shortstop:

Garcia - 4 G, 24.1 IP, 2.96 ERA, 1.27 WHIP
Diaz - 19 G, 114.2 IP, 4.47 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
Peralta - 2 G, 11 IP, 8.18 ERA, 1.73 WHIP
Gyorko - 1 G, 4.1 IP, 8.31 ERA, 2.31 WHIP

So pretty much Garcia or Diaz needs to be at short when Leake starts. But the fact that Leake has the best WHIP with Diaz at short, but a much higher ERA than with Garcia tells a story.

He's allowed 8 unearned runs this season, most with Diaz at short.

Garcia - 1 UER in 24.1 IP, 0.041 UER/IP
Diaz - 7 UER in 114.2 IP, 0.061 UER/IP

I was gonna say,

Diaz' E's the 1st 6 weeks gotta skew his overall average horribly.

Further, my guess is Garcia's games at SS with Leake on the mound has to be an extremely small sample size. I'd think Gyorko too.

Leake's final few games with Diaz before the injury actually did the most skewing. Three of Garcia's four are Leake's last five starts. Gyorko only has one game. I feel like in general trends are worth noting.

I generally try to not plug my stuff on here, but I wrote more on Leake this morning. If you look beyond results, Leake is actually having a career year.

Quick Hits: Leake is actually having a career year

If you’re like me, I was really excited at the prospect of bringing in Mike Leake. As I wrote last winter, my expectations for Leake were high because he’s a ground ball pitcher who is coming from one of baseball’s hitter’s paradises to one of the most pitcher friendly ballparks in the league. That should have meant the potential for a career year.

And he’s had it. The results just haven’t shown it.

When you look beyond his ERA, here are some fun facts about Leake’s 2016 season so far:

* Best BB/9 in the league
* 2nd best K/9 of his career
* Best HR/9 of his career
* 3rd best line drive rate of his career
* Best ground ball rate of his career.

Interesting R27. Sure wouldn't have thought he was having the year he is having. I do and have recognized the poor defense behind him at times though. I don't mind reading your "stuff" at all either.... 8-)

Some of his numbers, like his K/9 is likely inflated due to facing more batters, but he's actually pitched pretty well. Just not getting results.

Versus a guy like Wainwright, who really is just pitching bad.
