Game 146: Cardinals @ Giants, 9/15/16, 9:15 pm CT

Giants +0.5, Mets --, Cards -0.5 Wild Card Race

Waino, 11-8, 4.45 vs Cueto, RH, 15-5, 2.90

SHOWTIME! It's now or never folks. 4 game series in San Fran, almost do-or-die.

The Cardinals took two of three from the Giants at Busch in early June and are 43-28 on the road this season.

The San Francisco bullpen entered Wednesday with the fewest outs per game in relief in the NL, and it has blown 28 saves, the most in the league. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have outscored opponents, 250-177, from the seventh inning on this year.

Rosenthal is expected to be activated off the DL today.

The Giants are 27-24 in one-run games while the Cardinals are 21-22.

At minimum have to get a split here. The Mets have a super easy schedule the rest of the way. Losing 3 of 4 would make it really tough and losing all 4 would make it very very improbable.

I don't make these statements lightly, but IMO, the winner of this series gets a Wild Card and the loser goes golfing in October. The Mets' schedule the rest of the way is way too easy.

Also with the Mets off today, if the Cards win there will be a 3 way tie for the 2 wild card spots.

Giants just got swept at home by Padres. Law of averages says they'll rebound against us.

Exactly. We probably needs to sit down with Mo and help him assess the club.... 8-)

1. I don't start Peralta anymore. Period.
2. I don't start Jaime Garcia anymore. I gotta take my chances with Reyes in the rotation.
3. If given the oppty to do so I gotta try to line-up CMart as my Wild Card Game starter.
4. I gotta have Diaz in my lineup every day.

If we can't get Carp & Piscotty warmed-up again & get somethin' outa Waino this thing's over.

Agree with 2-4 if Diaz is good to go every day. Problem offensively is no one is hitting except Grichuk and Molina. This offense goes how Carpenter goes. Always has. A bunch of guys need to heat up.

Defensively we must put the best lineup on the field. Pitching will make or break us. Our starters must step up. On and on.

I think the main issue for me is that this club has never gelled....never come together. We'll be fortunate to make the 1st WC game. If we can somehow win that we would face the Cubs.... 8-)

1. Tend to agree. I'm not even sure he can contribute much off the bench though to be honest.
2. Reyes is starting Sunday for Garcia as he moves to the bullpen. Honestly, he should be shut down for the season unless you need someone to mop up innings.
3. Matheny has said that Martinez is the likely Wild Card Game starter.
4. I agree with Diaz. But he did just get back off the DL. Typically they like to get a guy back, play him a couple days and then get him a day off and see how he feels. I'd expect that he'll start everyday the rest of the way at this point provided everything felt good yesterday.

Getting Piscotty, Carpenter, and Diaz in the lineup everyday and hitting well is going to be the most important thing to this team. Moss too probably.

Garcia, Grichuk, Molina, and Wong are the only hitters who have been above average at the plate in September.

Broxton, Weaver, Siegrist, Reyes, and Bowman are the only pitchers who have consistently pitched well in September.

At that point he'd hit .226/.351/.484 with 2 HR for about a 110 OPS+. But yeah, he's buoyed by a good start.
