Game 153: Cardinals @ Cubs, 9/23/16, 1:20 pm CT

Postby chevyman58 » Fri Sep 23, 2016 12:12 pm

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Leake, 9-10, 4.54 vs Jake Arrieta, RH, 17-7, 2.96

The Cardinals enter a half-game back of the Giants and Mets for a Wild Card spot.

Maddon doesn't plan to start making lineup changes until next week, the Cardinals are in the Wild Card race and he wants to play them tough.

Matt Carpenter is a woeful 0-for-21 (.000) in his career against Arrieta.

Chris Coghlan has pounded Leake for a .579 average (11-for-19) with four doubles and two home runs.

Piscotty and Grichuk are the only active Cardinals to have homered off Arrieta.

We're goin' nowhere without Diaz. Just had a day off ........... is he hurt? Is he sick?

Arrieta starts Carp 2-0 then strikes out the side on 9 pitches to start the 1st.

1-0 Cubs after a leadoff walk, a base hit and a wild pitch. I didn't have a good vibe about this afternoon and so far my gut has been correct. :?

Walk the leadoff guy. One of those Wild Pitches should be a passed-ball and Wong apparently misplayed the ball into LF from a single into a double.

We laid-down in the 3rd game in Denver, why not just crap all over ourselves right outa the gate today too .....................

Leake putting us in a hole early. Given up a walk, 4 hits, 2 wild pitches = 4-0 Cubs. Finally got an out. Geez!....

Wong should NEVER be playing OF when every game matters like they do right now...

Top 3 in the lineup is 0-for-9 with 5 Ks.

Rest of the lineup is 5-for-15 with 2 BBs.

I don't understand why Gyorko bats 2nd. Most important spot in the lineup. Yeah, he's hit a billion home runs in the second half, but that's all he hits. A guy with more than one tool in his box is who should be 2nd.

Diaz is hitting .185 since he came off the DL. Carpenter is batting .212 and Piscotty .156 in the last 10 games. If Holliday was doing this, people would be screaming bloody murder for his benching.

Carp, Piscotty & Moss have COMPLETELY TANKED when it's mattered most.

What's killed this team is it's complete reversal of playing 'The Cardinal Way'. Absolutely horrible at doing 'the little things' correctly.

The bottom of the 1st & particularly the top of the 3rd demonstrate again how pathetic this team is at fundamental baseball.

And, for the 100th time, how we can consistently be so embarrassingly laughable at bunting 'skill' is beyond me .....................

It would also help if the manager didn't put out one of the worst defensive alignments possible with a pitcher on the mound who needs defense behind him the most...

Why not Garcia @ SS, Gyorko @ 3B & perhaps Pham in LF? Or Moss in LF? Anybody but Wong in LF?

Although, the franchise has never, in way over 100 seasons, won a ballgame when scoring zero runs - have they?

Nor have they ever lost a game when holding the opponent to 0 runs. You have to give Leake the best defense you can and let #BaseballHappens happen.

This is the biggest failure of the season. Was it June that I was on the UCB podcast and we were talking about how many games the Cardinals had given away with defensive failures. I figured it was slam dunk at least 5, but you could make an argument that it was in the double digits. And that's just games directly attributable to one bad play. And that was three months ago!

If the Cardinals play fundamentally sound defense this season, they're neck and neck with the Cubs right now.

The Cubs don't give away runs. They make you earn it. I saw something today that they're the only team in baseball that has positive defensive runs saved at every position.
