Game 154: Cardinals @ Cubs, 9/24/16, 12:05 pm CT

Postby chevyman58 » Sat Sep 24, 2016 7:42 am

Alex Reyes, 3-1, 1.03 vs Jason Hammel, RH, 15-9, 3.56

Reyes is coming off the best performance of his young career as he threw seven scoreless innings in a win over the Giants last weekend. He's shut out the Cubs over two previous relief appearances spanning 7 1/3 innings.

Hammel has faced the Cardinals four times this season. He won the first two of those starts, allowing one run in each, but has given up four runs in 5 2/3 innings each of the last two.

Chapman has not allowed a run in his past 28 1/3 innings against the Cardinals, a streak that dates back to 2011.

Off the last two days, Diaz has been having fatigue issues with his right arm and timing troubles at the plate since returning from the DL.

Mets... 82 - 72. .532, +1.0 ....... vs PHI, 7:10 PM
Giants. 81 - 73, .526, - - .......... @ SD, 8:40 PM
Cards.. 80 - 73, .523 , 0.5 ...... @ CHC, 1:05 PM
Bucs.... 77 - 76, .503, 3.5 ....... vs WSH, 7:05 PM

Gotta start Adams over Moss. Moss has completely fallen off the map offensively & Adams the best 1B defender.

Lineup & Last 10 games
2B Matt Carpenter (.206/.250/.235, 1 RBI)
RF Stephen Piscotty (.152/.222/.152)
LF Brandon Moss (.138/.188/.345, 2 HR, 4 RBI)
3B Jhonny Peralta (.208/.269/.292, 1 RBI)
1B Matt Adams (.333/.500/.667, 1 HR, 1 RBI)
C Yadier Molina (.387/.441/.387, 2 RBI)
CF Randal Grichuk (.314/.351/.514, 1 HR, 5 RBI)
SS Aledmys Diaz (.192/.276/.462, 2 HR, 4 RBI)
RHP Alex Reyes

Let's put our coldest hitters batting 1-4, out hottest hitters hitting 5-6-7, and we'll put Diaz in back because he's slumping but I don't care that Carpenter and Piscotty are slumping worse.

4-2 Cards after 1.

Watching us hit 1-thru-8 is there a slower lineup in MLB? 3-6 is scary slow, not much at all 'til #7.

The boys came to hit today! Wow. And Reyes got out of jams in both innings so far. Could be much worse.

OK, good work Alex, kept the team in the game through 5, but well over 110 pitches.... Turn it over to the pen. Probably would have preferred him being pulled at some point before throwing THAT many but hopefully it won't matter.

Big Win.

Bownan & Duke pitch 3 perfect innings. Only hit allowed last 4 was a solo HR off Oh in the 9th.

The bad news is Carp, Moss & Diaz look really, really bad at the plate - especially Carp.

Inside Baseball: Both of Grichuk's hits early, for 3 huge RBI, came on breaking balls. He got blown away on fastballs. Go figure.

Nobody seems to want to win these Wild Card spots. At this point, maybe the Pirates and Marlins have a shot. And speaking of the Pirates, it's not inconceivable that they could come to St. Louis for the final series of the season with a chance to sweep their way into a Wild Card spot. That would be the ultimate revenge for the last 3 years.
