Game #26: Brewers @ Cardinals: 5/2/2017: 7:15 PM

Postby chevyman58 » Tue May 02, 2017 2:57 am

....................................................................................................................................................

Wily Peralta, RH, 4-1, 5.19 vs Carlos Martinez, 0-3, 4.71

The NL Central is open for the taking. Even under .500 the Cards only one game back of Brewers & Cubs.

Despite an ERA over 5.00 Peralta has 4 Wins already while CMart remains winless - the only Cards starter without one.

Peralta's only Loss was 11 days ago when he allowed the Cards six runs on nine hits in four innings.

Peralta's a stellar 0-8 with a 5.46 ERA in his last 10 starts against the Cardinals.

Jed Gyorko is on fire folks.

Based on WAR, Jedd Gyorko is the 8th most productive position player in baseball so far this season.

Here's hoping Martinez dropping the hair extensions gets him back on the right track.

WOW, didn't see that being remotely possible.

You and me both. The problem is that while his WAR is great, he's really not that great at producing runs.

Carpenter is hitting .243 this year and has driven in 11 of 47 base runners (23.4%). Gyorko is hitting .369 so far this year and has driven in 4 of 44 base runners (9.1%).

I still want to see Grichuk batting 4th. Hit .327 with 12 doubles and 5 HRs with RISP last year, hitting .280 with 2 doubles and a HR in RISP so far this year.

Gyorko, meanwhile, hit .230 with just 6 xBH, all HRs last year with RISP and hitting .267 with 0 HR with RISP so far this year.

Cardinals win 2-1. Martinez gets his first victory. Wong with the game winning RBI.

Nice outing from Martinez for a change. Definitely more what we've become accustomed to.

I do find it interesting it came after he got rid of the silver hair. Thought Edmonds had a good point about him getting a little too comfortable after that extension. Found it funny that CMart decided to ditch the hair to change his luck, I love how superstitious baseball is.

To me, that's what it was, though I'm not sure it's necessarily getting "too comfortable," but rather that there is now more things competing for his attention now that he has guaranteed money.

The idea being that while you're a minimum salary player going year-to-year, you can't really afford to spend a ton of money on stuff. Not saying $500k a year is not a ton of money, but you're really an injury away from it all drying up and never making another dollar and having to go find something else to do with your life without nearly the same earnings potential. But now Martinez is guaranteed to make $50 million over the next five years. There are more things in his life open to him and competing for his attention because he has real money.

So I think a lot of the "extension hangover" is learning to balance those new demands on your attention.

Hopefully Carlos has handled that and this is a good sign of him being pointed in the right direction.
