Game 88: Mets @ Cardinals, 7/9/17, 1:15 pm

Postby chevyman58 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 7:54 am

...........................................................................................................................................

Steven Matz, Lefty, 2-1, 2.12 vs Longball Lance, 6-6, 3.87

First time in 10 years Cards will go to the break under .500. Not good. Need a W today. Come on Lance.

In each of his last two games Matz has thrown seven innings and he's on a 17-inning scoreless streak.

Lynn has allowed three or more runs in each of his last four games and has seen his ERA climb from 2.69 to 3.87.

Matz has worked at least six innings in 10 consecutive starts since July 24, 2016, his career-best streak.

Milwaukee 49 - 41 .544 - -
Chi Cubs 43 - 44 .494 4.5
St. Louis 42 - 45 .483 5.5
Pittsburgh 41 - 47 .466 7.0
Cincinnati 38 - 49 .437 9.5

According to Dan yesterday the Cards have the worst 1/2/3 combined batting average in MLB. That's gotta change.

Somewhat strange lineup IMO, particularly facing a very hot Lefty.

2B Carpenter .236
LF Pham .289
CF Fowler .244
3B Gyorko .305
C Molina .269
RF Piscotty .243
1B Voit .324
SS DeJong .306
P Lynn .071

Pham, Voit & that guy, DeJong, all with HR's to back 7 IP of shutout ball thrown by Lynn.

Cards win 6-0 taking 2 of 3 from the Mets heading to the break.

With their ninth win in 10 games, the Brewers head into the All-Star break a season-high 5 1/2 games ahead of the 2nd-place Cubs & Cardinals.

Back from a week long vacation.

Looks like I missed some good and some bad. Nice showing from Voit so far, not sure what's got into DeJong but I hope it stays.

Still lots for the club to shore up between now and the start of the second half Friday.

DeJong has hit .345/.370/.701, with 8 HR in 24 games during Wong's most recent DL stint.

I think DeJong's comparative reference would be Diaz rather than Wong, right?

What have we gotten out of Carp/Mejia/Garcia @ 2B in Wong's absence?

What happens when Wong returns? Mejia down, Carp back to 1B & Voit to bench?

He was called up again when Wong went on the DL and played 2B primarily until Diaz was sent down about 40% of the way through the sample. He returned when Wong hit the disabled list, so that was the time span I used rather than include his first stint during Wong's first DL trip. Even though he's hitting .313 for the season regardless.

Since June 15th when Wong went on the DL, the Cardinals are getting .333/.400/.560 out of their second baseman, good for a 156 wRC+, fourth in MLB.

But that includes DeJong primarily playing there for almost two weeks. Since Diaz's last start at shortstop, which moved DeJong to short more permanently, Cardinals are getting .326/.446/442 out of second base for a 141 wRC+, fifth in MLB.

This is super interesting. But I figure Mejia down. And beyond that, I don't know. Voit is hitting too well to bench, IMO. Carpenter is Carpenter. Wong was the Cardinals' second best hitter when he went down. DeJong is hitting. And Gyorko is somehow not only just hitting, but turned it back on here the last couple weeks. Five players, four positions.

I think Gyorko and DeJong are entrenched on the left side of the infield. It's Wong, Carpenter, Voit in the mix for the right side.

And Wong might have trouble elbowing his way in for playing time with the way Carpenter and Voit have been hitting. At least until one cools off.
