Time for Martinez to stake claim to his ace status.

I'll tell ya what .............. CMart is the most mentally frustrating pitcher since Chris Perez ........... My God Carlos.

Game after game after game he wastes his superior physical talent with mental midgetness. Just throws ballgames away ................

This year, more so than any in recent memory, hasn't been about when we lose but about how we lose.

Embarrassing ..................... just embarrassing. Again.

Hard to understand how someone with his ability just loses it. He's been in the big leagues long enough to be able to handle his emotions. Disappointing. We needed him to be better than this.

I keep waiting for Martinez to put it together and be the ace that everyone expects him to be, just not happening so far.

Carlos Martinez's 2017

He has 20 quality starts. Tied for third in MLB with Scherzer, Verlander, Kluber, and Cole. Only better are Gio Gonzales (21) and Chris Sale (22).

He has thrown 194.1 innings. Good for third MLB. Only Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija have more. Only three pitchers in the top-10 in innings pitched have a better ERA (Sale, Santana, Greinke).

Since Martinez became a full time starter in 2015, he has a 128 ERA+. Good for 11th in baseball among starters who have thrown 500 innings since the start of 2015. Youngest pitcher on that list too.

Let's see what those 10 guys ahead of him over the last three seasons did in their age 25 season...

Kershaw - 1.83 ERA, 236 IP, 194 ERA+, Cy Young
Arrieta - 5.05 ERA, 119.1 IP, 83 ERA+
Scherzer - 3.50 ERA, 195.2 IP, 120 ERA+
Greinke - 2.16 ERA, 229.1 IP, 205 ERA+, Cy Young
Kluber - 8.31 ERA, 4.1 IP, 51 ERA+, September call up
Bumgarner - 2.93 ERA, 218.1 IP, 131 ERA+, All Star
deGrom - Had not yet debuted
Price - 3.49 ERA, 224.1 IP, 108 ERA+, All Star
Carrasco - Injured, 4.62 ERA, 124.2 IP, 85 ERA+ the year before
Sale - 2.17 ERA, 174 IP, 173 ERA+, All Star

Martinez - 3.57 ERA, 194.1 IP, 120 ERA+, All Star (2 or 3 starts remaining)

So you've got the stars like Kershaw and Greinke and Sale and Bumgarner. Three of those four also left handed. But the other six guys, he is clearly even or better than at 25.

With Martinez it's always a question of "yet." He's not an ace yet. Will he get there? Very likely. Is he there right now? Not quite. But he's still pretty good overall.

His lack of emergence as an ace this season is reason #1 why I think the Cardinals have to bring back Lance Lynn. Lynn is having a career year in the year he came back from Tommy John. That's not supposed to happen.
