My understanding is that Hickey was the Cardinals' #1 option until Maddux became available. But it's also possible that they learned Hickey was going to Chicago and switched gears. My understanding was that was supposed to happen today, but I haven't seen it yet.

Maddux also reportedly received five job offers since being let go by Washington.

It's an interesting hire and it's a complete 180 on how they've handled the coaching staff and really play decisions for a long time. When Maddux was hired by Washington two years ago it was believed that he was the highest paid pitching coach in the game. You have to imagine he's at least the highest paid coach on the St. Louis staff now too. It will create some very interesting dynamics in that dugout.

Glad to see a new voice being brought in. The LaRussa "family" has had literal decades of success, but it was starting to feel pretty homogeneous.

Rawlings announced that Yadier Molina, Buster Posey and Tucker Barnhart are the finalists for the National League catching Gold Glove Award. The winner will be announced during a televised award show on Nov. 7 @ 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Not surprisingly, no other Cardinal even sniffed consideration in '17.

I'm a little surprised that Gyorko did not get a finalist nod at third base. But at least they got the only three third basemen you can make an argument were better than him.

MLBTR posted up their Off-season Outlook for the Cards.

The writer is pretty bullish on the club and notes that they might be the deepest team in baseball. The paragraph nails it though.

The offseason path for the Cardinals will be one of the most difficult to predict in all of Major League Baseball. They don’t have any glaring holes on their roster, but they’re in need of some upgrades overall. They could make those upgrades in a number of different places and have the resources in payroll space, prospect depth and major league talent necessary to get something done.

Pressure is on the front office to make some moves. I'll post up the "Be the GM Thread" later tonight.

Yep. Cards have a need and have the capital. No excuses.

Cards discussed Colome

Looks like they're discussing bullpen help as well. Active discussions so far for the Cards, curious to see how much if anything takes place.

I would love Colome. He fits the mold of what they like and has team control.
